Gross Green Water

Hello Tamara,
hogan here,
:good: i still think this could be a lighting problem with excess phoshate in your tap water
feeding the algae.

Do you have light colored decor in your house?

When you do lots of water changes you are feeding the algae more of nutrients each time, you need
to deprive the algae of those nutrients the best way to solve this problem is to collect rain water and add this as a water change if you have the option to do this.

hogan. :look:

light colored decor? ...well the walls are white?
i'll try to do that....but now that it's summer, i don't think there will be any rain if any here..

tellin ya the snails really do the trick, cheap and easy

snails have a tube to suck water down to eat the stuff in the water, u dont see snails with big ol choppas do ya

I`m no snail expert, but I do like to add them to my tanks deliberately. All I see is them rasping along various surfaces.

If they can filter diatoms out of the water, then my guess would be that you would need a huge army of them. I`ve never heard of the use of snails to cure green water, but if it has been done I would be very interested in hearing about it.

My lfs sells smallish bags with phosphate remover in them. Stick one in and let it do the work.

Algae in my experience needs phosphates and sun, take one away and it dies.

Other option is to put a UV in, have you got one you can beg borrow or steal ?

Sorry if im talking poo and youve been through this, I have to admit I didnt read the whole thread

Tamara
hogan here, best thing for you would be to try and keep the lights off for a couple of weeks, there is plenty of reflected light from your white walls and that combined with lighting could be causing your problem, just use them for cleaning and veiwing for a hour or two each few days.
Monitor the water and if there is any difference this may be the solution if not i would purchase some phosphate removal medium that will help.

all the best hogan :good:

alright i won't turn on the lights at all to see if that works,
i'm going to do little experiment in bottle of the green water
i.e. one plain, one covered with towel, one with asprin, one with willow plant etc.
just to see how i can get it to work.
