hi everyone,

i hate hatching bbs

i'm just wondering, is there ANY live food that can replace bbs for betta fry? i heard grindel worms can do it, but is that true?

Yeah, grindals are good but they're kinda weird. I never had luck with them :dunno: Daphnia is also good but...that's hard to keep too :X Mine died because of hair algae :X :X

No luck with regular ole' frozen brine?

i'm afraid that the frozen bbs wont' have the same nutrition value as live bbs :X i feed them when my hatchery fails (which is quite often now, to the point where i'm getting so frustrated that i just want to knock the thing out!)

i was hoping i could find some kind of worm culture (like the mw) that's low maintence and would save my sanity during early fry stages

the thing with my frozen brine is that it melted on the way home, and i refroze it back in my frdige...and since then something tells me that they don't have any more nutrients in them

p.s. why are grindel worms weird?

I dunno why they're weird, I guess because I let them croak. I see bkk in here so I'm sure he'll fill you in on some good stuff.

Personally I make them take frozen bloodworms, brine and daphnia,Formula 2,crushed flakes and most recently, pellets.

grindel worms are good but it's a little work picking them out of the dirt. still, we have had great success with our spawns by using them. my wife has a neat technique whereby she will pick both worms and dirt into a plastic cup and rinse them untill all the small micro dirt particles have been flushed from the cup. she will then submerge the cup with worms and dirt into the tank bottom so that fry can feed directly from the cup. it's a clean method and doesn't cloud water if you have pre rinsed the cup enough. there is also nothing like seeing 100 fry all inside a little cup feeding like their lives depeded on it. ;)

:D cool, anything that deosn't involve HATCHING things. i think i'm going to go insane

wuv: i can't get them to touch frozen food, something is wrong with my method imo :/ but i can't relaly rush it yet because it's only been a bit, we'll see if i can get them converted

bkk, do you sell any grindel worm cultures? maybe i can buy some off you? :) pwease? pretty pwease? :look:

sorry cutecotton, actually marianne at bcbetta was recently asking us the same thing  our culture has dwindled to a critical state ever since our ct spawn, it will take some time to get it up and going again. i would suggest you check out aquabid as there are people selling them on there. ;)

:D aww that's too bad bkk! but thanks anyways B) i'll go check out aquabid righ tnow.

so i get grindel worms..does that mean i'll never have to hatch bbs again? :D

actually, we still use bbs until the fry are big enough for grindel worms, sorry to break it to ya cute ;)

aww poop

so do i really need the grindel worms then? :/ i wonder what's a good price for them, i'm checking a few out by aquabid, but i'd much rather buy from someone from the forums (i dont' know why -_-)

is there anyone else on the fourm that sells grindel worm cultures?

so bkk....how long did you have to feed the bbs for before you hit grindel worms? and how big are they anywyas?

can i use mw instead of bbs

p.s. you can tell i'm really starting to hate bbs :S

with our last spawn, vinegar eels were used during the first 3 days after they became free wimming. bbs was then used for a week. we tried something different this time and started grindel worms much earlier than ever before (in the second week). even though the worms were large in comparison to the fry the fry still had no problem eating them. for smaller fry we would still include some bbs. this method i think contributed to our fast growing spawn. by two months a good portion of our fish looked like little adults already with full colouration.

hmm that sounds like a great feeding schedule :D

i'm thinking of getting a vinegar eel cluture and a grindle worm culture. Of course i think i should only get this if i'm really serious about breeidng them..or else i'll just have rotting worms in my house! -_- thanks for the advice bkk  i think i'll get myself the vingear eel and grindle worm

you dont' have vinegar eels you want to slel do you
