I have just seen someone giving away some glass panels from a greenhouse and was wandering if this would be strong enough for me to make my own tank? If so then I am very excited :)

Things you need to know, how old is it? How thick is it? Anything special about it.

Some glass is tempered (modern greenhouses will all be) and you won't succeed in cutting or drilling it. Older greenhouse panels were lethal if you fell through the window as they weren't tempered glass, but a lot of them were made from very thin material which won't be all that much good for a tank.

I've used old greenhouse panel for cover glasses, but never for the actual tank (I've never needed to, float glass isn't all that expensive and I've always managed to pick up 2nd handers for very little). Remember to clean it very well first, greenhouse fertilisers and pesticides can linger.

I am waiting to hear back from the person about the glass and it's measurements etc.

Where can i go to find 2nd hand glass? I don't have a clue and don't know who to approach

2nd hand tanks on gumtree/ebay/freecycle and similar places. You can pick whole set ups up for potentially nothing, and often for very little if you stop to look at the filters and other kit that they're bundled with.

having worked in the glass trade for 12 yrs or so, id be very wary of greenhouse glass, greenhouse glass used to be only 3mm think, but some were 2.5mm. also old glass or used glass can be brittle when trying to cut, always try to get the glass to room temp before cutting as it helps. beware of any damaged glass as the smallest bit of damage does weaken the glass
hope this helps
