Hi my friend is getting rid of his tropical set-up and is giving away his green terrors (he has two males and one female) one of the males has never really had a chance to live a normal life, ( hiding away in fear for most of it! ). my question is, would it be ok in my tank with with 4 golden barbs, 2 clown loaches, 2 geos and a common plec?

My tank is 4ft long, standard depth/width etc with lots of caves and plants for all to hide in, any one ever kept green terrors before please can you give me some advice as it really is a stunning fish. The terror is about 3 inches long if thats any help, i know it can grow to 8 !!!!!!

You say common dimensions but theres 2 sorts of 4 foot tanks I know, a 55gallon, and 75 gallon, which would make alot of difference. Could you post dimensions so people can be sure of the tank size as I think this will matter alot.

sorry i should have given all the sizes, 4ft long x 16inches wide x 20 inches tall, approx, i cant remember excact tho.

I would say a yes but with fingers crossed.

As you say, they are stunning fish. Mine was a 6" male, very moody/aggressive/territorial.
Not bad with fish that were smaller than him, but anything the same size or bigger was hounded and harrassed.
It was all too stressful in the end, for me and the other fish and back to the LFS he went, very reluctantly.

He doesnt show any aggression where he his just now, he just hides in the tall grass but im not sure if he will try to prove himself in my tank, my geos are the same size if not a little bigger although not aggressive am sure they could be if provoked!!!! i think il give it a go, i can always put him in my breeding tank by himself if it all goes pete tong!!!!!!!!!!!!

i had a pair of Green Terrors a while back, they are just as bad as a oscar or even worse with aggresion, they will eat/attack nearly any fish that is not as big as the green terrors!

also google.com (GREEN TERRRORS) cichlids, you will find out alot about them:)

the male green terrors realy bully the females sometimes so watch out!!!

The main reason for getting him (GT) out of the tank was that he was biting chunks out of my oscars which were bigger than he was at the time.
Possibly a single species tank for the green terrors, or very careful tankmate selection. I got it wrong, but I understand the attraction.

When Breeding them i strongly reccomend having them by them self!

you also might want to look into other ways of breeding the green terrors if they start to fight each other you can divide the tanks into two parts using a mesh covering and a peice of slate sitting verticaly onto the mesh so that the female can lay her eggs on it and the male can fertilize the eggs though the mesh onto the slate. This way they will not fight each other, I did this myself and was very succesful after having the problem of them fighting.

also i had my pair breeding very well in a 160litre 4 foot tank! BY them selfs....
