Well first off im asking the asking for my mother but also curious as myself.Anyways she is finally getting tired of replacing her filter cartridge that have the carbon inside them. She has a ten gallon with about 6 fish in well anyways can she use one of those thin scrubby pads you use to clean things with?

Just get yourself some media like biomax(little ceramic tubes) and some filter floss.  I don't run carbon in any of my tanks unless I am removing meds.

Well personally i run an aquaclear but my mother has a catridge filter you put in there. I know you dont need any carbon thats why im asking if you can use a green scrubby pad instead of filter floss

I see what you mean.  I have heard of people using them.  I know you probably know this but check to make sure they don't add anything to the pads like an anti bacterial or something.  I use aquaclears too and set my filters that use cartridges up like them with good results.  I'm just a big fan of the biological media and filter floss.

you can get sponge media for a external filter, cut it to fit the filter that she has to create the filter media, then she can rinse it out with aquarium water when needed... just make sure you get the dense media so it can catch more waste. also doing weekly water changes should limit any smell if anything occurs with the change.

Berryattack you have the devils evil number of posts ha well anyways, but i will tell her to use that or some filter floss cause i dont like the sounding of using the green scrubby pad. Thanks guys

I buy huge pond filter pads for pence and cut to fit my tank filters when required, if you have access to a hot wire that's the easiest way, but a sharp knife and scissors work very well too. I never buy branded pads, waste of cash. Pond filters come in loads of grades too so you can choose what works best for you.

Just rub the AquaClear sponges, I have over 20 assorted AC filters running and they all use the same media- 2 sponges with a layer of floss between them. The bottom sponge is coarser than the top when I am able to engineer that. I actually give away the biomax stuff that comes with them now. Oh yes- I also have a pre-filter sponge over all the intakes as well. The sponges get rinsed out weekly and the floss gets replaced at the same time. It is not a good idea to leave dirty floss in a filter as over time organics trapped in it will break down and release back into the water.
