i have a group of tiger barbs which i feed very well but whenever i seem to feed the catfish the barbs never stop pecking on the sinking food on the ground so i am wondering is there a way  to stop them as the catfish seem to be put off which could starve them. would it be better if i feed them at night when it is dark so the barbs cant see the catfish food fall into the tank

You could try putting the food in after dark; it's about the only thing that might work. tiger barbs are one of the greediest fish of all, IME.

What sort of catfish are they?

My opaline gourami won't let anybody touch "his" hikari wafers, he prefers over any type of flake food....if you don't mind you could just stick your arm in the tank and "guard" the wafer while the catfish are eating it, that's what I sometimes do when it's really bad. I find that feeding wafers isn't really the best when there's other fish, because they all want it. For that reason I mostly feed my corycats brine shrimp or bloodworms so the other fish aren't jealous, depending on what type of catfish that's a better idea. If it's a pleco then that can be solved easily by simply feeding it blanched veggies.

My tigers always try a little nibble on my hikari wafers I try to feed to my plecs and loach but generally leave it alone immediately. They much prefer a bit of frozen or dry.

Thanks for the suggestion, but i have found out that if i put the pellets in the cave were the catfish rest near the barbs dont touch the food and the catfish can eat the food in peace. So i guess when i want to feed the catfish frozen food i should put it in at night
