Hi all

We have some long grass like plants, small bunches (sorry don't know the name, got told in Bulgarian and we don't know the translation). They grow very well, don't bulk out too much, but the problem is that they grow so long (about 10cm at least along the surface), blocking the light out a little. My question is do we cut them short enough to touch the surface or from nearer the roots? I will try to get a photo of them.

Thank you

Does it look anything like this?

If it is, you can just cut it to the correct length, but a better way is to repeatedly remove the taller leaves once they get too tall, thereby keeping it short. Just run your fingers down each leaf until you reach the bottom and a quick tug should free it from the base.

Or did it look like this?

Thats hairgrass (Eleocharis acicularis ), and after seeing it in Georges excellent nano, i've decided to use it it in mine too. It looks much better when its in a tank and growing well, not like the picture really.
Although from your desriction it does sound like vallis, as Themuleous posted.

Hi themuleous

That is the plant I was talking about, but also thank you three fingers, we are going to get some of the hairgrass.

Thanks for the tips, that's brilliant, we will now get into gardening mode today.

Thanks again

I guess I should add that, that plant is call vallis (vals for short), there are several species and generally they are easy to grow.
