my gourami male has only been in the tank since yesterday but has been with his female in a bare tank in quarentine for the past 6 weeks

well he has become very attatched to one of the grassy plants is this because he's getting broody ?
i read that they like a plant to make bubble nests in

he's got really protective over the plant and keep sort of cleaning it and wont let anyone near the plant but there isnt any nest in there or anything , is it just he has picked his territory
he and the female get on well they swim up to each other and just wave their feely bits at each other swim around each other then go their own ways again

anyone got any ideas

Thanks Sarah x

That's him chose a terrirory.I've got 6 honey dwarves, had them for about 3 weeks now, they are just starting to colour up.One male in particular has chosen a sort of cavey bit surrounded with plants right in the middle of my tank as his.
He seems to be the strongest male, certainly coloured up the most, and he chases all the other fish away bar the largest female, who he shows off to something awful, swimming on his side and fluttering his fins.

my males definately in luvre with the female they both are now displaying to each other all the time
he has started to make a little bubble nest and then he distroys it again

very weird fishy

my 3 year old has named him king

He has just decided he likes that plant, they do get territorial. If he decides your female is ready to spawn he will build a bubble nest on the surface in a calm area, usually destroying part of your plants to add to it.

if they breed i will be like this  lol, ive had a male (honey gourami) make a nest and he just wouldnt stop tearing it apart, its really frustrating. i was hoping they would breed. but they didnt :(

i phoned lfs and they are quarentining 3 females for me for 6 weeks so hopefully i should get another female in 6 weeks time - as long as all of them dont pop off lol

well he's still building bubble nests they are getting bigger and he's been distroying one of the plants and using that aswell
he then goes finds the female and she chases him off , he then goes and destroys the bubble nest -

why are they doing this

they have only been in the tank since sunday

Hi pippoodle :)

The male gourami might be the aggressor, but when it comes to spawning, it's the female that has the final say. If and when he builds a nest that pleases her, and if she has eggs, only then will the spawning take place.

i'll get him a book - how to build the perfect bubble nest - and see how he gets on lol
awww bless him he's horny and she's got a headache ;)

When she is ready to spawn she will fatten out across the chest area.
He will build a nest but if she doesnt like it she will not use it. When it comes to actually spawning she will instigate that by budging his back end, he will then be surprisingly gentle with her.
My dwarfs bred a few month ago in my community tank but the other fish wrecked his nest even though the poor male was trying to guard it like a bear possessed.
When they showed signs again of beginning to get interested I put them into a 2ft tank and I now have absolutely tiny baby gouramis. Believe me everything that could have gone wrong with this batch has gone wrong, the tank cracked so I literally dumped the fry into the shrimp tank, then my filter packed in so I had to run out and get sponge filters, I really thought I had lost the lot but I seen at least one still going strong tonight so I am over the moon about that.

can the bubble nest be removed / floated into a breeding net once the female has laid the eggs init?
just an idea thats all , still only building a nest everyday then distroying it again lmao - kids named him king but i've named him bob ( the builder ) lmao

congrats on the fry ;)

BUmp can someone answer my last question please

thanks Sarah

The nest usually breaks apart if you try to move it, the fry are usually free swimming within a couple of days so scoop them up in a tub or cup then and move them to somewhere safe. The fry are so tiny they would escape from the breeding net.

i use a proper net not the breeding trap cos i use this for my minnow fry as they are too small for the plastic trap
so would the proper net be ok , my minnow fry dont get out of it , would the gourami fry (if i do have any) be about the same size ?

Thanks Sarah x

Not sure about your net but my dwarf gourami fry were only about half the size of platy fry.
