I am just thinking of turning my hardwater 650 litre tank into a predominantly gourami tank (I already have 6 clown loaches, 1 clown plec, 6 bosemanns rainbows), possibly looking out for rarer types as well as the more popular. Are there any pieces of gourami common sense I might not have? Does this sound like a feasable idea (I'm not that interested in breeding)? I haven't been able to find a dedicated gourami society or website!

Sounds nice, i like the look of the big chocolate gouramis, but i think they are pretty hard to keep.

My favorite gouramis are pearl gouramis. Big Peaceful creatures. I'd like to keep them with some honeys one day. If it were me i'd avoid the 3 spot as i have heard bad stories about aggression. Dwarf gouramis can be prone to bacterial infections so be sure to get healthy gouramis from reputable breeders to avoid unnecessary deaths.

If your looking for something a bit different then why no try sparkling/croaking gouramis?

Whatever you do be sure to post some pictures please :good:

Indian/Banded Gouramis [Colisa Fasciata] are very nice fish and I'm gonna get some for my tank, they look like bigger, slightly Orangy-er than Dwarf Gouramis. :good:

You shouldn't have too much trouble picking out some nice Gouramis for a tank that large. The tankmates should be fine as well. I would stay away from the really small Gouramis like the Sparkling but just about any other should be fine. Be sure to get at least 2 females for each male and probably best with only a single male if you want to get Blue, Opaline, Gold, Lavender or Three Spot Gouramis. Getting multiple females spreads out the attention/aggression from the male.

If I had that setup I'd add 1 male Opaline or Gold, and 4 females, one of each color.

You could do the same with Pearl G's if you prefer. If you add 1 male & 4 female Pearl G's you can also add 1 male Honey & maybe 2 or 3 females for him.
