Got Myself 5 Golden Half Beaks At The Weekend.

sp00ky,

consider this a bump...all I know about half beaks is they like a little salt, live foods, are jumpers, and move quick...I forget who he is, but I swear there was a member that kept them and posted in livebearers a lot a few months back...maybe do a search of them on the forum and you can find the member I'm thinking of and he might be able to give you info...I thought they were kinda interesting looking, almost like pike....Good luck!

Hello --

Halfbeaks don't need salt. By all means add some if there rest of the tank needs it, but the halfbeaks themselves don't need it. There's a good commentary on this in the Aqualog "Brackish Water Fishes" book, but in a nutshell its a myth most likely come from when people misidentified juvenile marine halfbeaks for freshwater halfbeaks.

I've got a tonne of stuff on halfbeak keeping and breeding on my web site.

If you still have questions, ask away.

Cheers,

Neale

I have some Wrestling Half Beaks (Dermogenys pusillus) and they were a little delicate at first. I lost a few of them after I got them home. I have three left now out of the original six and they have been doing great for months now (though the males HATE each other). Make sure to check out nmonks site! Great info, he helped me out when i got my guys. Now i just have to get more! Awesome fish!

What species are the gold half beaks? Are they just a different color morph or a species?

i bought them from my LFS as Golden Halfbeaks. When you look at them from the side, they actually look silver... but when you look down on top of them you can see they are golden down their backs.
