They were probably Chinese Algae Eaters: at first they are nice and kind and eat algae, then when they get older they get mean and suck the slime coats off of fish, severly impairing the fishes immune system.

Definatly dont get one of those. They would get way to big for your aquarium. I had one and she became very agressive and really big! Actually two big for my 29 gallon tank!
