Good Aquarium Heaters

I lost a bunch of fish last night, I thought it was because the heater just wasn't strong enough, but turns out the #41#### thing just doesn't work at all

That would be much less of a huge deal if it weren't for the winter weather bringing down the temperature (to a point where I need to wear a sweater inside to stay comfortable)

So I need some suggestions on what I should get

it's a 37 gallon, and currently on lifesupport by a 100 watt that came with one of my old tanks, it's a piece of junk, but at least it works.

I need something durable that can keep itself up through the Colorado mountain's snow season, and most importantly, doesn't sit in the tank with the light on saying it's heating, but in reality not doing anything at all but looking fancy.

It needs to be 50 dollars of less, that's all I've got for the budget here, and I'm ordering it online, as the LFS has nothing but these bad heaters and other heaters that have bad reviews. So go crazy on suggestions as long as it stays under 50 dollars.

I quite like fluval e-series. not sure of price in US though sorry.

I'd think in colarado mountains might need more than usual to keep stable temp in winter.

e-series is like 100 dollars for the cheapest, way out of my league here

They have m-series heaters for cheap, but there are so many horror stories of them cracking and being totally worthless

do you know anything about Aqueon Pro heaters? some websites have good reviews, others have reviews of them not working out of the box

I also bought the Aqueon Pro 100 for my son's 20 gallon. I liked it so much that I bought the 200 for my 36 gallon. I've been told to always buy a step or two bigger than the maximum it's rated for. I almost bought the Fluval chrome one because it was the same price for the same size. I chose the Aqueon because I like the fact that the light is green when it's on but not heating & red when it is heating. The Fluval only lights when it's heating & the light is blue. If no heat is necessary there's no light so you don't really know if it's working or not. Both heaters are very accurate so far, and I got the first one a month ago and the second one two weeks ago.

I think the Pro 100 was about $30 & the Pro200 was about $40

Don't buy "Petco" brand. Bought one as my backup and it was dead out of the box. I ordered another 150W Eheim Jager from Drsfostersmith.com for $36 including shipping to go with the one I already have. I agree with nurglespuss to have 2 heaters just in case. Especially in Colorado. You can get a 100W for $34 shipped. Eheim are highly rated, German engineered, shatterproof with electronic thermostat and auto shut off if water level drops too low. (waterchange insurance)

I have a 50 watt Biopro bought off Ebay for £7.99 (no idea what that is in dollars, sorry) It has a light so I know it's working and so far so good

i bought my fluval E300w for $52 (from PetMountain.com).. you don't need a 300w, and i've seen the E100w for as low as $30 on ebay. buying them online is far less expensive than at an LFS.

try Petmountain.com and ebay. there are some deals to be had.

Visitherm heaters are supposed to be very reliable and have a thermostat that covers a wide temperature range, something like 18-32C. Having recently removed my African fish out of the garage 5x2x2 for the winter, to my dismay I only then discovered that the two Rena 300W Smartheaters I bought last year only go as low as 20C (but annoyingly the heater turns on at 22C instead) and I am aiming for a cool winter period of 18C for my Barilius and Redline Torpedo Barbs.

The heater I bought that doesn't even work was $27.00, and they're probably gonna come up with some excuse to not refund it.

Yeah. I could figured petco brand anything would be no good.

I'll likely keep the complimentary tank heater as my backup, it surprisingly works well, it just looks like junk and it's somewhat confusing to adjust, and I wanted higher wattage, which is why I took it out and got a new one. Worst mistake I've made yet.

Get 2 100w heaters, this way if one breaks the other will be able to maintain the temperature until you can source a new one. It's always a good idea to have a spare filter and a spare heater in the cupboard.

I was under the impression that the stuff lasted forever, as the filter and heater on my 20 gallon are older than I am. My aunt gave that tank to me when I was first starting, and everything works fine on it seems like the components to such things are so simple, I dunno how they manage to make them so fragile
