Hello,

The LFS has a fish they call a Golden Malawi, but I have looked it up on Google and cannot find them, can anyone shed any light please.

Leon

The only Malawi i can think of that might be called that is Melanochromis Auratus. Check out this link and see if it matches:

I believe it might be the Melanochromis Auratus. Do a search on it and see if you recognize it. If so: Proceed with caution, these guys are nasty little buggers.

how about maylandia estherae (red zebra)?

If it's orange, i can only guess it is an estherae although i've never heard it called a Golden Malawi before (which makes absolutely no sense if this ID is correct and i think the LFS just made it up  )

Good thanks,

Another thought is the lemon cichlid (Neolamprologus leleupi ) from Lake Tanganyika. Check this out:

still not I'm afraid Ferris mate, he's a cool looking fish though, hmmm.

I am thinking of doing an african community tank. One of these looks good.
Along with a few your Avatar fish and my Black Clavus.
:D

any other ideas about the fish, the nose isnt quite this long.

Is it bright orange like the estherae or more yellow? Is it a single solid colour or are there any stripes/markings?

Got to get this now, its bugging me!

Bit of a wild stab but what about this Aulononcara?

All the fish already suggested seemed like realy plausible candidates but, as you say they aren't the fish you saw, are you sure it wasn't just a yellow lab? :p

What about pseudotropheus/maylandia lombardoi/kennyi (very similar to m. estherae)? They are often called 'golden zebras' and they do live in lake malawi so I thought maybe that's where they got the name. The males have the yellow coloring which varies from a pretty dark orange to a paler lemon yellow. Sometimes males will also show stripes (depending on mood). Females are blue with dark vertical stripes and may go yellow as they age. I tried to find some pics on google but I'll admit they aren't the best in the world. :p

One last suggestion - melanochromis auratus - the albino morph. The horizontal stripes are sometimes visible but occasionaly the fish is solid colored. The eyes are pink/red: http://www.aquariumfish.net/images_01/aura...albino_w270.jpg

It wasn't a yellow chromide right? They aren't exactly golden malawis :p but just in case...

Try Melanochromis johanni....female.

Pretty sure this was the result I got in a prev. search. ;)
