hello
i have a golden gourami in my tank 3.5ft community tank that i saved from the toilet (yep evil people out there). all fine for months and then he/she gets this red spot on its fin around 5 pence piece size. so i start up my water changes to 15% a week and nothing changes but the fish looks fine and is still hiding in its normal spot feeding well, up and down for air every now and then. overnight the spot disappears after being on the fish for around 12 days. help? seems odd to me but then i know nothing about the gourami at all. also would the gourami do better with tank mates? without knowing the sex i'm not sure what to do. thanks

You have to determine if it's male or female. If it's a male it will have a longer, pointed dorsal fin. Feamles are usually fatter & the dorsal fin is rounded & shorter.

If you have a male, add 2 females of similar size to that male. THis spreads the aggressive advances out between them & reduces their stress. If it's a female you can add more females or 1 male & at least 1 more female. Again, make sure they're roughly the same size & maturity.

You don't have to add Gold Gouramis either, you can add Blue, Oplaine or Platinum since they're all color variants of the same species.

Post some decent pics & I'll tell you what you have............ :good:
