i have a pair of these golden barbs, pretty good looking fish, i dont think ive heard of anyone on here having them. but i thought id ask, maybe some one knows something. how do you sex them? and any other useful info would be apprieciated.

Common name Golden barb
Scientific name Puntius semifasciolatus
Synonyms Schubert's barb, Green/Half-striped barb, Barbus/Capoeta semifasciolatus (not valid)
Size Up to 4", but ususally smaller
Origin Asia, however the golden variety is not found in the wild.
Tank setup Planted tank with some swimming space, community tank
Temperature 18-24oC (64-75oF)
Feeding Omnivorous, most foods accepted
Sexing The male is slimmer than the female.
Breeding An egg scatterer, which is likely to eat many of its own eggs.
Spawning usually occurs in the morning. Eggs hatch in 1-2 days.

Pretty much on par with danios.

thats exactly what i needed, but ive had them for a while and they have never bred i dont think. but i can tell the the male is alot slimer and the female is alot wider.

I have gold barbs, 5 of them, and I love them, they're a great fish, I think I messed up though, because I didn't realize how to sex fish when I bought them and now that I've read about sexing them I think I've got 1 female and 4 horny males (as they can be found chasing her around the tank obsessivly to the extent I've had to remove her and put her into my 10 gallon quarantine tank a couple times (but the last time I did that was over a month ago, now she just holds her own against them) I think they're great fish though and one day would love to be able to breed them (no extra tanks at the moment though, as I only have the 20g and 10g treatment/quarintine tank (that may get turned into a brackish figure 8 tank b/c they have one the my lfs now and I fell in love with it (just pray for no sick fish))... just thought I'd share that you're not alone, I have gold barbs too and love them.

Barbs scatter their eggs...shortly after they will attempt to eat them if not removed from the tank. Idealy you would need a seperate tank for a spawn to work.
