i recently purchased two gold nugget plecs from my local aquatic centre and they settled in just fine. I have a faily well planted tank with some big lumps of bogwood. The tank has been running for about 3 mths with all levels fine. I use r/o water with added minerals to which the water hardness has reduced dramaticaly, but after having the plecs for about a week and a half i awoke to find them both dead. I immediatly checked all the levels only to find the only high level was phosphate. Will this kill plecs or is there something else i need to check for. I would like to sort this out as this variety of fish is one of my favorite but i am reluctat to add anymore until i resolve this problem. All of the other fish in the tank our fine by the way.

now I could be wrong with this, but I believe that gold nuggets are kinda delicate. my back up LFS had one for over two months that I slobbered over............so glad that I didn't get him 'cause I went one day and he was dead.....they have excellent water conditions and have all of the know-how on how to take care of these and theirs still died. hopefully, someone who knows about this will come on to tell you about phosphates...............

I guess what I am trying to say is that this was probably not your fault or your phosphates.............could have been that they were just stressed out from being moved and the like. They could have had something when you bought them too....... :dunno:

good luck, try not to let this discourage you from trying them again........

Yes, these fish need excellent water conditions and are hard to get acclimatized to a new tank. As with many Plecos they may have already had intrenal parasites etc so it probably isn't your fault and don't give up just make sure the conditions are right before adding them.
