Hi,

I am currently in the process of setting up a convict breeding tank...

I was thinking of using a 4 foot tank but was wondering the following.

- Would a common plec harm the eggs/fry convicts or clash with the parents?
- Is only one pair of convicts advisable for breeding?

Any other useful information?

Thanx in advance for your answers.

I would be more worried of the convicts hurting the plec, It should be fine. 1 pair of convict would work fine, but I don't get what you are trying to ask :dunno:?!?!?!. I, personally, don't think breeding regular convicts are worth it, next to guppies and other livebearers, cons are bunnies of the fish world, the type of pair I would look into is one pink and one black. I have a breeding pair right now, They make Calico convict babies. some can be really cooooool :D

I’m setting up to breed convicts because ive never bred any fish before and these sound ideal for a beginner, I also like the character and looks of the standard convict.

So would it not be advisable to keep a plec in with them if I was breeding, I know Convicts can be quite aggressive but I was more worried that a plec would make a snack out of the eggs or fry.

Before you start breeding look for a fish store that will take them. If you don't you may end up with lots of cons and no place to dump them. Kind of like breeding a cat. Do you really want to house that many fish for there live spand? Where I live cons are used as feeder fish for $.10 a fish. :X

I know breeding pairs locally go for around £5-10 in my area not sure about the size of the demand.

Anymore info about compatibility with a plec?

So you are planning on breeding one pair raising the fry all the way to breeder age then selling the sibs as breeding pairs?

I was thinking of doing that with the better ones and maybe selling others to LFS who is in need of some cichlids...

The others i could use myself as feeder fish or sell as feeders (not keen on this as i'm too sentimental about any fish i have).

I know what you mean, but it is common for pet stores, by me especially, to use them, and sell them as feeder guppies. Just an idear anyways, would your neighbors want any, worked with mine, one of my neighbors has one that turned out really pretty and now i want her back :-(

I do know several people who keep fish and one who like cichlids in particular so i would be giving/selling some to friends and family.

I will be getting the tank this weekend and have a spare filter running in my large tank to keep the bacteria going in it, how long would it be before i could get some convicts...

You haven't seen the fury of a pair of breeding cichlids yet, PDX. The pleco would have its eyes ripped out and slowly be picked apart by both of the parents. My advice: Don't ever mix a pair of breeding cichlids with any living thing :)

I'll leave them on there own when i get them during the week then...

Many thanks for the advice.

Dwarfs hit it....Breeding pairs of Cons are really borderline crazy when protecting their fry. Be ready for a surge of fry and trust me you will be using them as feeders just to keep them in control...I can't imagine any pet store that would readily take batch after batch of fry for very long. I'd also keep a divider or spare tank on hand. Once protecting the fry my Male would go nuts and attack the female like she was an intruder/threat and I had to seperate them. I know using them as feeders isn't exactly the pretty solution but if you decide to let them breed you'll have to make some decisions.

you best hurry up and come pick em up then dude LOL !!

they are in my gourami tank at the moment and the JD is keeping them in check. They had a go at one of the Khuli loach when i first put them in, but they have calmed down a lot now. However, i think the aggresion may have been because they had eggs in the tank my friend took them to and they ate them before i got them, so there may have been some maternal thing still going on. !
