sorry about the capitals

Id like to get a new fish to go into my community tank, somthing not as common as mollies, guppies, platies etc etc

any ideas?

:kana:

If it's the tank in your profile I'd get rid of the silver shark before doing muc more. What kind of plec is it? And cories should be in groups of 4+

Other than that some tetra would be nice or some kind of loach (small, remembering to get a group if needs be) or otos (again a group).

no to tetras, i dont like them

the shark has been in there for months and they are all fine?

the pleco is a sailfin, amongst the biggest i know, however he will be able to live in that tank for a few more months before he is moved into our 5 foot tank when we move out

Silver shark > bala shark > 12" > groups of 4 > 6ft tank at least

There's your problem.

Your plec may get stunted in there and will cause a lot of waste and pressure on your filter.

You don't like all tetras?

I suggest you look in the fish index or something to see what you like and whether they are suitable. Or better still, see what's there then look them up.

maybe you should tell us what you do like instead of waiting for us to post and telling us what you dont like......

I agree, silver sharks look nice :hyper: :hyper: but as I discovered they grow BIGGGGGGG -_-
and as your tank is not 6ft long unfortunatly you do need to address this problem. Also your guppys, some times the betta attacks them because of their shiny tails like other male bettas. :/
This happened to me 7 snakeskins gone :-( if your luckey this won't happen :look: have you ever concidered a nce shoal of barbs

Speak of nippers galore !
I think it's a vast generalization to say : "I don't like tetras" - there are so many different kinds. So many of them look nothing alike each other.
Personally I love Rummy Nose testras but they need 6 or more - as do the majority of tetras in fact.

LOL, its also a generalisation to say all barbs nip :p Tiger barbs are the mian culprits, most others are fine. And they only nip if theres not enough to spread out aggression between them.

LOL Ok, so I perhaps just did the same thing :p
But I've had Tiger, Ruby, Rosy & Cherry Barbs years ago and eventually got rid of them all as (the tigers more so) seemed to nip an awful lot :/
Though to be honest I can't remember what exactly I kept them with - though no doubt a combo of life bearers.....

well IME, cherry/gold barbs are the least nippy out of the lot...tiger barbs and rosy barbs have nipped equally in my tank

reason i dont like tetras is because they killed our first betta.

we took them back to the LFS, bought a new betta and he has been fine ever since, apart from an incident with a guppy but they havent had a fight for a while now, and we've put more plants in since to break up the line of sight.

The silver shark is more than happy in the tank, and the plec is something i think im going to need to address. He is getting quite big now, may be time for him to go soon.

BTW when she said she was going to the fish shop, what did she come back with?

4 platies

Mmm - Tetras encompass a very large number of very different fish.
By saying "I don't like tetras", is a bit like saying : I don't like brown dogs (type thing). You get big ones, small ones, watchdogs, lapdogs. It's not entirely fair to group them all into one catagory at all.
