I have 1 male beta in a 5gal tank, home made sponge filter, tank been running for about a month to two months all cycled etc. I have got to go away for 5 days, will he alright without food for that amount of time if i feed him up, and will he be ok without a waterchange?

your fish should be fine w/o a water change for 5 days - as for the food, i dont think they can survive 5 days w/o food, or it is very unlikely. i think petsmart/petco sells some bar food where u can leave it in the tank for ~7 days(?) for situations like these.

If you do a water change and feed him before you go then he should be fine.

bettas can last a very long time without food. But if you are worried, it might be an option to leave instructions with someone. The other option is a food block thing, but I would choose leavign no food rather than one of those as they muck up the water quickly.

I never feed my fish when I go away...at least 7 days. Just make sure you feed them for the few days before you go away, and also make sure water is in clean condition. In my view those blocks are no good for bettas they just make the water dirty. He will still love you when you come home!

most bettas don't go to the bottom to feed on those white blocks - despite what your lfs may say. I peresonnaly haven't tried, but maybe if there is a way to attatch the block so it is suspended on the surface of the water... bettas may eat that.. just a though...

I ended up in the hospital for a week and didn't feed or change my betta (who was at home) for that time, luckily I over fed him in the morning and did a water change like 2 days before and he was fine and still alive when I got back... although he was hungry and ate like a pig :p

I feed my bettas every other day, they are right pigs and dont know when to stop but can last quite a long time without food, obviously starving them on purpose isnt a nice thing to do, but if you cant get anyone to look after him he'll be fine
