Looking to buy a canister filter.Like to to see what you think is the best one.Around the 200-250$ range.

I've used Fluval and Eheim. Both are great for me. Others may tell you a different story though.

Eheim seems to be considered the best by most of those who have used both. I've never used them but do have 2 Fluvals and they have worked great (almost 3 years old now). Rena makes great air pumps but not certain if that carries over to their filters or not.

Ehiem hands down.

I have used Fluval filters for years with no problems but many others have had issues with them leaking.

I have recently made the switch to ehiem and other then the fact that they are self priming they are excellent. You need to get a priming kit or suck on the outflow tube to get it going (not nice when the tank has been running a long time).

Another alternative is tetratec. I havent used these myself but they are apprently very good.

I've been using a Rena XP1 for about 4 months now and a Rena XP3 for about 3 weeks now, I highly recommend them as a less expensive alternative to the Eheim canisters, which are excellent but a bit expensive IMO.

The Rena is a very very simple canister filter, no bells and whistles but it's a solid filter, simple to use and prime, has a self shut off latch for when you need to disconnect it from your tank to clean it, and has virtually no bypass if any at all. The trays for media are basically boxes so you don't need to purchase Rena media if you really don't want to. I began purchasing my filter pads and water polishing media on my own and just cutting it to the correct size which is easy with the Rena.

As for long term reliability, I can't say for sure but they are a very simple design so there isn't a lot that can go wrong.

There are other canisters besides Eheim?

I have a couple of Pro II 2026. One has doubled as a pressurized co2 reactor for almost 6 years now and it still runs great and quiet too.

i have had a fluval 105 for a 80l, then a 205 for my 180l and i have just bought nother 205 for a 60l. I have had no problems with any

I have several of the Rena XP series filters. They have been dependable and easy to maintain. I just got one of the marineland C series, the ones with the stainless steel tank, in November and it is working great too. My only experience with Fluval is one of those in tank filters and it does what its supposed to do. The Eheims are too rich for my blood. They may be great filters but I don't like their price much. I've been spoiled by a great working set of Renas that cost less than half as much.
