I'll be gone from the 23-29. Should I get someone to feed my fish? Or will they be good for that period of time?

Healthy adult fish are fine for six days, you can leave them, if you have someone reliable who knows how to feed them that would be better but as cold blooded animals six days wont bother them much.

What kind of fish do you have?

If you have aggressive fish, I wouldn't leave them without food.. they will most likely try to eat each other if they are hungry.. I've had it happen a few times actually.

I agree, I have been able to leave a peaceful community (say cherry barbs, rasboras, corydoras, you get the idea) without food for 6-7 days, but I wouldn't do that to my semi-agressive serpae tetras, a type of blood characin, who would have no problem munching on the smallest in the group if I gave them the opportunity. It would help to know what fish you had first.

llj :)

Hmm, I have a tiny black ruby barb so possibly the white skirts will pick on him. and I've actually seen the white skirts giving him a rough time.

Slight hijack here (SORRY!) Im also going away for 6 days in Jan. Seems ok to not feed them, but what about the lighting? Leave it on the whole time?? Off the whole time? TIA and sorry for the hijack!
Also, you could try an automatic feeder (though kind of expensive) or the feeder blocks they sell at LFS's, but I haven't heard to many good things about them.

The auto feeders I have seen aren't that expensive. and a timer that fits inbetween the plug and socket is also not expensive. both together be about £20 total and it wouldn't be just for these 6 days. would be of use for many years.

Well I'm leaving on the 23 and getting back on the 29. Perhaps I can get someone to feed them on the 26? So they don't get too hungry.

You can buy fish feeding tablets, they are a pyramid that breaks down gradually and are made just for situations like the one you are in.
As the outside wall of it dissolves, the inner part (food) falls out giving the fish a meal. You can buy different ones for different times you are away, so go to you lfs and have a look for some. :good:
All the best Joemuz. And dont forget that during the time you are away, dont worry as you wont enjoy your holiday. :look:

Not a good idea, these are plaster based and will pollute the water. I reccomend TetraWeekend Tropical Slow Release Feeder based on a gel fomula. I will be using these ase the timed feeders down here are about 80 USD!

I am curious to Breeze7050's question. I am also wondering about it...

I you shure as they are made for aquariums? ????

Actually Joemuz I've read on this forum several times how dangerous they are to use. I'm definitely not trying them.

I would feed them well for the week before, then let them be for 6 days. Feeder blocks are a sure way to pollute your water, and you won't be around to deal with it.

If it's not a planted tank room lighting will be fine for the fish, if it's planted get a timer for the light. None of my tanks have live plants, my top row of tanks is illuminated by the lights in the room.
