I have three glowlight danios in a 30 litre divided tank with 2 bettas and 3 neon tetras (on the other side)
I have the filter on the danios side and the heater on the otherside.

Yesterday I found a danio dead on the bottom of the tank, I scooped him out and couldn't see anything physically wrong with him. I put it down to old age, as I don't really know how old he is. I did a water test and cleaned the filters.

This afternoon I came upstairs and found another danio floating at the top - I thought he was dead but he's still breathing. I've seperated him and added salt and some general tonic but I'm not hopeful :(

I've tested the water again and all is fine.

The only symptom I can see is red gills - after some googling I have found this: http://www.fishdoc.co.uk/disease/flukes.htm Could it be flukes!?!

If so what can I do to protect my bettas?

None of these fish are new and have been living happily in a 60l tank and now this tank for about 2 months with no problems!

is the tank a 6 gal or 12 gal. Or a 12 gal tank divided into two halfs.

What rest kit are you using.

Red gills can be due to bad water quality, gill flukes, bacterial gill rot.

Signs of skin and gill flukes are.
Flicking and rubbing.
Darting or erratic swimming.
Laboured breathing, or gasping at surface of tank.
Red sores on the fish.
Swimming in a jerky movement.
Opaque body with excess slime.
weightloss sometimes.
Spitting food out.
White specs on the eyes.

Its a 6 gal divided. I'm using a tetra 6 in 1, the strips.

The danio in question died a while ago, I have one left. I'm keeping a close eye on him.

I've started aerating the water with an air pump (much to my bettas dislike :(!) to help the medication spread.

I'm not sure about any of those symptoms! He seems to be staying in the same place and swimming around every so often. There are no open sores but he seems very pinkish around his gills. Heres a video I took on my iphone - apologies for quality.

The tetras seem to be having problems too, they're swimming at a jaunty angle - one seems to be struggling to not float to the top - do you think that's connected? they have been wonky for a while...

the Bettas seem to be showing no signs of symptoms - as far as I can tell.

The tanks overstocked then.

Take a sample of your water to the lfs and ask them to write the readings down for you.
Also I would suggest investing in some liquid test kits, as test strip cards are not accurate.

What do you feed the fish?
For now water change and feed some shelled peas.
What does it look like when the fish that can't stayed balanced look like when he goes to toilet.

Not being able to keep balance is swim bladder.

overstocked? It was 3cm under 36cm before the deaths not any more! :(
I have been looking at the liquid kits - could you recommend a good (affordable!!) one?

I feed the tetras/danios tetra flakes, the bettas betta flakes and frozen bloodworms. I'll see if my housemate has any peas - I hate them so I don't buy them!

I'll have to wait to tell you the colour of the tetra poo!

What treatement would you recommend for swim bladder?

Ok.
Api liquid test kit is good and cheap. Except the nitrate test kit it's not very accurate. So I buy the tetra brand test kit in nitrate.

Improve the fish diet with some frozen foods like daphnia which helps the fish digest it's food, and brime shrimp.
Also fish love green veg like cucumba, lettuce, sproats, spinach, broc, peas, green cabbage.

Don't feed to many bloodworms as they can cause bloating.
Don't feed bloodworms for a weak.

Cook some frozen peas for a few minutes. let cool down and pop out of shell. Mush into small pieces and add to the tank.

excellent! thank you! do any of those other veg have any special preparations? I have access to a LOT of brocolli/cabbage in various stages of development lol

You just blanch the veg in boiling water for a few minutes.
