are glow danios a dyed fish...i saw some at a lfs and they were a BRIGHT pink and orange rarely found in nature....

They are GMO (genetically Modified organisms). Not dyed. Created by adding the flourscent gene from jellyfish to the genes of a Zebra daino. Resulting in a brightly colored fish that glows under UV light. (the same has been done to cats) The fish breed true, except there is a patent on them. There are no adverse health effects, they are a hardy as regular zebra danios. I would never buy them, but I don't have problems with people that do.

it will glow brighter then it did without a uv light. dear lord poor fish

I see no prob with it. As long as it dosent cause any effect's to the fish, i dont see anytihng wrong. THey were invented( so to say) to be natural water tester's, they would turn a certain color to show us if the water quality is good or not. Well, it hasnt worked out that way. As long as people dont try to play God, i see nothing wrong with it.

Yeah, they really glow under UV or black lights, the whole fish will glow.

They where originally created to detect pollution. The glowing gene was suppressed and they where released into waters around power plants and stuff. If there was a large amount of pollution in the water it would trigger the glowing gene and the fish would start to glow. This would alert researchers to the problem. They are now mainly sold for pets. There glowing gene is no longer suppressed so they always glow. Power of Science.

my husband was reading that peopel put them under uv lights to make them glow neon...and for more then a few seconds will blind them...is that true?

There are 3 different types of UV light UVA, UVB, and UVC all come from the sun. Long exposer to UVB and UVC light can cause sunburns and damage DNA in some cases. Short exposer to these rays should not cause any harm. Although too much of these rays can cause cancer in people. Too little can have the same effect.

Black light is UVA and is what they use on crime shows to find blood and stuff. It is the safest UV light. It can accelerate skin aging in humans.

Taken from wiki- "The definitive environmental risk assessment was made by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which has jurisdiction over all genetically modified animals, including fluorescent zebra fish, since they consider the inserted gene to be a drug." - I don't think it works that way
