Okay, I am totally stumped! I have a two gallon tank, abd I'm getting glofish. I have been told many different thing about how many can go in my tank. And please tell me only if you know a LOT about glofish! Also, will they accidentally mate? And if they will, can I just get males?

Sadly 2 gallons is not big enough for any fish, have you got a picture or description of the tank, filter and heater that you have been sold?

sorry about that am i right in thinking
that glofish are about the size of a danio i would say about 4 as i am a bit unsure it all depends on the filter as well if iam wrong you can correct me

Haha, why does everybody think I'm saying GOLDFISH? I'm saying G-L-O-F-I-S-H!!!!
I'm sorry, I don't really have a description 'cause it isn't with me now. I had a betta that was bigger than a glofish that lived in a one gallon tank and lived almost two years, he also made bubble nests. Is it that they would rather live in a larger tank, or they wil die if they don't. WILL THE GLOFISH ACCIDENTLY MATE IF THERE'S A MALE AND FEMALE?!

I would NOT put anything in something that small... even a betta deserves a 10 gallon! You should look into the "Which is The Most Abused Fish Species" Poll and have a vote on what you plan on putting in that BEER MUG! ----> http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?/topic/331300-which-is-the-most-abused-fish-species/

Glofish are coloured variants of the Zebra Danio. Like my Pearl Danios, these are strong and zippy swimmers and therefore eally need a 48" (4ft, ~240litres) long tank...

Sorry! Sorry! I am getting them a ten gallon tank, happy? SORRY!!! But will they mate on accident? :/

Youre about right... i am getting four :) thnks for the help! :)

Ten gallon isn't even particularly fair on them, I've had danios in a 2ft tank in the past and they were far too active to be kept properly in such a small space.

You probably won't get any eggs or fry surviving unless you specifically want them to.

congratulations on only listening to the parts you wanted to hear!

I wasn't aware anything in nature "accidentally" mated. Except teenagers.

What an idiot!

I definately think the bigger tank will be a lot better for them, my boyfriend has zebra danios in my old 30" tank and they so like the space to wizz around; they are very energetic fish.

I'm not an idiot. I said accidently as in if I have a bunch of glofish and then there was a male and female, would they mate without being alone? Like in one of my plants! What do you mean listening to the parts I wanted to hear! I have my ten gallon up and running and the Petsmart lady said I can't get my glofish until three days after I purchase the tank.. How long can a glofish go without eating? Sorry for all the qustions, I'm kinda bad at this and I've only ever had two bettas and I went horribly wrong with their tanks I now see... SORRY! :(

Glofish are highly active, they therefore need considerably more room to swim than a 10 gallon can offer.
Will they survive in a 10 gallon? Yes.
Is a 10 gallon ideally suited for them? No.
Will they mate? Dont think so, because of their genetic modification I believe the fish are sterile and can not reproduce.

Glofish are a man-mad variant of the zebra danio fish. These fish get to around 2.5 inches each and are highly active shoaling fish. It is absolutely not fair to keep them in groups smaller than 6-8 and they ideally need larger groups than that. These fish shoal in their thousands in the wild and are mentally and physically adapted to shoaling behavior. IMO, it's unnecessary and selfish to keep these fish in tiny groups.

Due to their adult size, swimming speed and activity levels they need much larger tanks than one would think for their size. The absolute minimum I would keep this fish in is a 24"/2 foot tank. Ideally I'd like to see them kept in 36"/3 foot plus.

Please ignore the money-whoring workers at Petsmart. These people are employed and trained buy a huge corporation that uses animals to spin profit. They do not recieve proper training - only what is needed to tell the average customer that they can keep lots of fish in tiny tanks. They will rarely mention sensible stocking guides, rarely encourage you to get a biger tank/not to get large fish for a small tank, rarely mention tank cycling, etc.

Fish keeping is NOT about listening to someone who is PAID to give you advice that makes their company MONEY. Fishkeeping is about research and listening to people who give you a GOOD REASON to do things that you don't like. It's not just about picking out the small number of people who tell you what you want to hear and ignoring the rest. That is how ANIMAL ABUSE happens.

There are very few fish I would consider suitable for a 2 gallon tank and bettas, glofish and goldfish are not some of them.

All fish tanks also need to be cycled and any newbie who goes into fishkeeping without researching the nitrogen cycle, fishless cycling and water testing is either an idiot who has not done enough research or has been mislead. However, even that isn't an excuse. The information is out there and is scientifically backed up. It's easy to find and people will often point you in the right direction.

Here you go - THE RIGHT DIRECTION
