I saw some fish in my lfs called glow fish, which looked like zebra danios with red and blue coloration.

If they looked like zebras, with the stripes and all, then they probably were dyed. :-(

At one of our lfs in town, they sell "Red Zebra Danios". They are zebras that are dyed red... I hate seeing them.

they are genetically enginered zebra danios. They have jellyfish/anenome dna depending on what type you buy. A lot of people disagree with them. They are illegal here in CA.

So far nothing has been shown to be detrimental to the fish. In the future perhaps but as of the past 10 years of their existance, no one has reported on any health problems I know of.

they say that they are as hardy as regular zebra danios. however, i had 4 regular and 3 glofish in the same tank bought from the same store at the same time. i still have the 4 regular. the 3 glofish died quite a while ago.

Even still...I don't really care for it.

I just think we should leave fish the way they are...no artificial dyes or biologic dyes. They are all beautiful in their own right. If someone wants to buy a blue or a red fish...then don't get a zebra danio...thats not their intended color. Get a Neon tetra...there...now you have the best of both worlds.

Everyone has their own opinions on them. I don't care to keep them but I'm not against their existance either.

I think that most people know my view on these so I will say no more
I have a page on my website about Glow-fish™ if you want to look at that.

We bothered to raise money for science they Have made over 30 different types of glowing or flourescing Zebra Danios over the years and 20 medakas these particular zebra danios were made to study vertibrate development and then they desided to sell them for some money to run the labsthey were not made to the consumer they just bred the descendants of those made for science My glofish is very hardy I think it depends on how they weretreated after they came out of thebreeders tanks (I have never seen a deformed Glofish other than humpbacks but thats from overfeeding not genetic problems) But hey I'm biased
