Hi All

Just a quick on top of my aquarium i have an oak lid under the lid it has a glass lid that slides left to right, i was just wondering how much light gets lost going through the glass lid and would my plants benefit from me removing it, would the light penetrate into the water more?

Thanks in advance.

A good question, I've wondered about this myself.

I think, without the glass, the plants gets more benefit from the lights, especially if glass gets condensation or misted up due to heat of water and light.

However, i am not 100% certain though, may not make any difference at all!

Two things spring to mind.

Your tank sounds rather like mine, and so you would need to consider what fish you have - any species prone to jumping would be liable to kill themselves.

If the glass is kept nice and clean (a thankless task, I realise), then the light loss should be minimal.

I would keep the glass closed, tbh.

I have no jumping fish so im good on that one but the glass is kept clean but does mist up with condensation maybe ill try it half open tbh im not sure i will gain anything but it may be worth a try.

Misting up won't stop that much light getting through. With condensation on the lid, it will drip back down into the tank. If you open the lid, you will get more evaporation.

If its like my old tank you need the glass sliders closed else any evaporation will gather on the wooden lid and then drip back into the tank. You could be at risk of some contaminant in the wood getting into the tank (varnish, polish or however the wood was treated), also the water will quickly damage the wood resulting in you needing a new lid.
