Hey, ive been looking around for fish to stock my 55gal.

I have decided on some glass catfish, and while at the LFS today i saw some Glass Fish. Some had ich all over them... but if i can find a good batch id like to get some.

I know these fish are commenly dyed too. (which i wouldnt buy)

Ive searched to try to find info on them, with not too much luck.

Not sure which species either... so ill try my luck here first and mods, move it where u se it fit! :p

I think they are tetra's. Mid swimmers. like groups of 5-6. Need good water conditions. Absolutely beautiful fish. sadly it's hard to find them without paint. Ask if they have been painted even if you see no paint. it fades with time. It isn't likely that they would keep them in stock for 5 months or more but it will only take a few seconds to ask so why not. You may even bolster the LFS's faith in the ability of glass fish to sell without the paint.

http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=72000 - Here is TFF's fish profile on the Glass catfsh, if this is the species of fish you are talking bout.

They arnt tetra but catfish, as the name emplies.

They are terrific little fish that swim in the water coloum all day. Nuetral water params will surfice. Feeding them frozen, live and flakes. Sometimes they refuse flake but they should take good tasting stuff in time.

They do recquire good quality water and i would STRONGLy advise NOT to buy them with ich. These fish are very tough to treat and do not respond to meds in a very good way.

Well this was at Petsmart...

The only real place with the largest selection of fish...

But im pretty much 100% positive that were not dyed. They looked 100% natural with no color. They looked just like the glass cats.

Id really like to get em' not too expensive either.

Try not to buy infected fish.

This will increase the chance of you introducing it to your already established and healthy stock. Why take the risk.

Wait till healthy specimens come up for sale. :)

EDIT. well that goes for all fish, whether catfish or tetra. In your first post you siad GLASS CATFISh so i assumed you meant it, not glass fish! :p

yeah i know exactly, Thats why i said

"but if i can find a good batch id like to get some" ;)

Thanx :D

Hi..do you mean glassfish or glass catfish? Two different species. The glassfish are usually the ones that are dyed. I bought two in my 'newb' days not knowing. One died, the other is still alive and his 'dye' has gone away. They are more prone to illness and stress. You should complain if the lfs has the dyed ones.

Glass catfish (Kryptopterus bicirrhis) are neat. I have three now for amost a year. They prefer to be in schools and hang out usually midtank and enjoy a small current. They usually feed when food floats to them but will head to the feeding frenzy when hungry. They will tend to hide towards the back of the tank sometimes. Hope this helps. SH

yeah i am talking about the glass FISH not the catfish lol sorry for the confusion. Ive already got my info for the Catfish

I just wanted to look into them because theyd look cool with the glass CATfish

There's also two glass CATfish - kryptopterus bicirrhis and the 'african', eutropiellus debawwi.

The (indian) glassFISH is chanda ranga (centropomidae - not characidae - they aren't tetras). They benefit from some salt in their water as they are an estuarine species. They are shy, grow to about 2.25" and can sometimes be sensitive to fluctuations. A tank built around them for them is best with lots of plants and things for cover and only peaceful tankmates. They do best when fed a varied diet - not just flake foods. They are a territorial fish (not aggressive though) with the male establishing a small territory. Males have more color than females. These fish can actualy handle quite a low temperature but do best around 76 deg F. They will breed by laying eggs amongst plants and don't realy care for them after but getting them to spawn in the first place is very frustrating :p.
