I use nutrafin bubble counters in my tanks with DIY co2 injection....I have had no problems with them. I see many posts saying that glass diffusers are better...what are the advantages of glass diffusers over the plastic nutrafin ones?

are you referring to those ceramic glass diffusers :) those need higher pressure (PSI) to function properly, it looks better but i have never tried one since i cant source one locally so im not sure if it diffuses co2 better into the water :) but my guess is yes :p

There are 3 main advantages of glass diffusers:

1) They are subtle and generally quite small and therefore do not detract from your aquascape

2) Small bubbles have a larger surface area than large bubbles. A diffuser will create tiny bubbles that whirl round your tank, and due to their surface area, they are absorbed quicker. Generally you waste less with a diffuser when compared to a ladder

3) Glass is easily cleaned and will not change colour like some plastics do over time.

I would always have a glass diffuser over a plastic ladder or similar any day. As stated you waste less gass. They also look great!

The appearance of equipment is often overlooked but I think this is a part of the trade that needs to develop. Especially for things like fitler inlets and outlets as they typically look very obtrusive.

i used one on my hagen ladder system,it seemed to function well for me,even though i now have pressurized co2.

Funny you mention that - keep an eye on my journal soon, I have a little surprise for you all!

If I had pressurised CO2, I'd definitely get one with the spiral and diffuser, but with DIY I'd be a bit worried about clogging it up. Particularly since if a DIY setup ever gets completely clogged, there's a risk of yeast mix ending up all over the floors and wall. No doubt it would be the thing I'd come back to after being on a holiday a week  . Just my thought really.

I use two JBL varios connected together as a single ladder and get 35ppm CO2 with 2 * 2 litre bottles in a 200 litre tank. Seems fine.

Say you unblocked your diffuser weekly so that an explosion would not be likely. Can you see any other problems with a glass diffuser and DIY CO2. I wondered if pressure would be a problem.

Yes I agree, I dont know why I have not seen tanks with hidden filter and heater built in so you can see them.....Do they exist...

i dont think it would be an issue.you can see the diffuser plate and would be able to tell if it were becoming blocked.i think the bubbles would just move to another area of the diffuser plate if it were becoming blocked.the underside does not seem to get blocked just the top so i think if you just looked at it every now and then you can see the bulid up on the top of the plate, although im still looking for a good way to remove all the build up.ive tried to use a toothbrush and a scrub pad with no soap but no real way to get it back totally clean as of yet.i think i will ask this question since now i wanna know how others do it.

Well I mean if you used ADA lily pipes, an external heater and external filter and glass diffuser the hardware in the tank is very minimal.
