im setting up a 44 gallon corner tank for a puffer tank. basically i dotn know the first step as to taking care of them? i just planned on having sand as the substrate, live plants, mostly amazong sword...possibly some grass like plants. and then some puffers. now can puffers go together? or how does that work? please just give me the run down so i can set this all up. thanks!

Cycle the tank first

Congo spotted puffers Tetradon Schotodeni and dwarf puffers Carneotetradon Imatature (sp?) are both peacefull (relatively) freshwater fish or you could go with one of a larger fish like a congo puffer (Dont know)

I suggest CSP's because they are so cool, but there hard to find

Congo puffers are not really that big at a maximum size of 5.5 inches and do nothing but hide under the sand all day!

You could have quite a few dwarfs in there but I'd possibly suggest a going for a single Brown, (t.turgidis 6 inches) or a couple of Emeralds (t. cutcutia[/i] 3.5 inches) or a pair of Cresteds (C.lorteti 2.5 inches) or, if you aren't bothered by the potential need for puffer dentistry, a small flock of say, four South Americans. (c. asselus 3 inches)

Stocking levels are based not only on size, but also on temperament.

The trouble with Freshwater puffers iss that there aren't really any mid-sized species, they're either small like the Dwarf, South American and Crested, or large like the Dragon, Fahaka and Mbu.

The few medium sized freshwater species available are either very aggresive and have to be kept alone, or very sedentary, or both!

I thought it was 7.5 inches... sorry

Also the bronze puffer (I dont know but I own one) is a piscavore who grows to 12 inches, rather mean fish who will fin nip and even scale fish if they are to big to eat, some stories of success in pairs but more of failure, Mine chewed off all the fins on my female endler when she got sick with internal parasites. He loves flake food to, eas it as his staple and if I add a nail or a handfull of bloodworms he will go for flake food first, guess he likes the taste of fish over ivert.

A great fish, Again if you can find it

If you mean Aurioglobus modestus the Golden or Bronze Puffer, it's supposed to get to 4.5 inches maximum, but as it comes from South Thailand, I don't think we'll be seeing any of those imported for quite some time....

I've seen the bronze puffer marked as 12 in several places, and Ive see the gold puffers written about as a 4 inch fish that looks very similar.
