I have had 2 female bettas in my tank now for ages, the male died 2 months ago. I replaced the male 2 days ago and have noticed that the 2 females (usually very calm), have started facing off or swimming side by side and flicking each other with their tails. Is this normal and if so what are they doing?

p.s Why do yous call them betta, I've always known them as siamese fighting fish?

Very carefully & with a lot of research.
If I were you, I'd remove the male, or there are going to be injured fish

They basically breed like gourami, the male makes a bubble nest and then puts the eggs in it and guards it with his life until the babies hatch.

Males and females should not live together, no matter what people will say.

Also females should be in a minimum group of 5 to stop aggression
No pet store ever explained it to me like this!

OP says the male died and the problems started then.
The male was probably ruler of the tank and your females are probably fighting for that position since he passed away.
They are fighting over territory and one will be badly injured if you don't seperate them.
In the wild the loser of the battle could swim away and recover.
In your tank the loser has nowhere to go and will be badly injured or die.

You should seperate them.

The op got a new male 2 days ago, that probably caused the aggression, he's now taken the male out, so hopefully all will be ok

Actually he said the male died then he bought a new male. ^
