Yes, providing root tabs will benefit it and it prefers hard water

It is a tough plant, but severum's will still be able to bite through it, and yours looks pretty big (going by avatar image), but if you think he will be ok then try it. Last trading post on ebay sell some good quality vallisneria

Some 15 to 20 years ago, Valisneria served as standard background to every tank I set up & was prolific..... It suddenly became unavailable here and as much as I want a Chocolate Gouramie, (or ten), I cannot get hold of Valisneria... I'd love to get some again....

my sev is around 5" atm he used to be a nightmare for chomping up my plants but he doesnt seem to do it anywhere near as much these days. i rekon i will get some and give it a go . i have been reading a bit about giant valis and it sounds like it could work being fast growing and hardy

The Severum will munch that plant near the bottom, which will effectively destroy the plant. I would not even attempt it. You'll just end up with long leaves floating on the top of the water.
