After everything that has happened, I have finally cycled, got everything down to a good level, and now my filter appears to have packed in, I am hoping that my heater hasn't too. I am watching the thermometer passionately to hope it isn't going down. :(

Try not to worry about things, patience is a virtue! Try and save your broken filter media if you already havnt!

Just get a new filter, filters tend to "crap out" every once in a while, just buy a better one :) No worries, persevere!

Think I've revived it, I guess the filter over night isn't such an issue, but the heater is, still watching closely, seems to be pretty constant so fingers crossed the heater isn't broken. Think something just got blocked on the filter, gave it a little knock and it came back on, will have to keep close eyes on this, I don't want my catfish to die :D

If the whole thing stopped due to a simple clog you might not want to put off buying atleast a cheap back-up, ideally invest in a well built replacement :)

Good idea SJ2K.

PRW1988, I am actually not sure, I've been through the whole of the catfish pictures section and can't find one close, I asked also the person I bought it from and he doesn't know either.

It is black with spots but it is hard to get a photo of because it's pretty shy and as soon as I get close it goes back in to hiding. I keep trying.

Hi NickT24 :)

What kind of filter do you have? If it's an AquaClear or similar style filter, it has to be taken apart once in a while so you can clean the impeller. If you don't, it's apt to clog up and behave the way you described. If it's a different kind of filter, perhaps it might be helpful for you to start a thread in the Hardware and Do it Yourself section.

The kind of filter I mean looks like this:

I have a tetratec filter, I will see if I can find a picture, it doesn't appear to have a model name/number written on it. It's not the same style as what you just posted though, it is a rounded box attached to the side of the tank with the heater in one side and the filter in the other, all enclosed.

This is the thing, I only have a 15 gallon and I've just read the topic on them in the catfish section and it says minimum of 30g. I think it is still young as it's not very big, 3-4 inches, if it gets much bigger then I will look to rehome. He's very peaceful.

Yeh will get a bit too big and nasty for a 15 :) enjoy it for now though.
