Does anyone know how to get rid of snails? I don't buy plants from the pet shop, but I buy the bulbs at walmart. I've never had a problem with the bulbs having snails, but one day I notice snails in the tank and I hadn't put in any plants or anything in almost a year. Now I have an infestation that I can't get rid of and they are eating my plants! Is there something I can put in the water or a fish I can get that doesn't eat guppies, but snails?

If your tank is large enough Clown Loaches go through snails in no time (appart from Malaysian Trumpet Snails). Alternatively the easiest way to thin them down is to sink some lettuce leaf into the tank, leave it with the light off and then pull it out a couple of hours later covered in snails. You need to make sure you don't overfeed you fish too.

Might be worth investing in some kind of botia loach, as they readily eat snails.

safest ways IMO

you can either remove them by hand , or try one of the mid to small sized botia loaches .

says something about fin nipping on this link . Skunk loaches can be acquired at small enough sizes not to pose much of a problem [ to your guppies ], once the snails are gone , trade the loaches off .......

About how much does one of these loaches cost and are they common in pet stores? Also, do they eat snail eggs?

Eat eggs ? don't know , but they eat snails , and eventually eggs hatch in to snails , sooner or later you'll most likely be rid of snails ........

I've gotten them for under 5 US dollars , somewhat common in shops , and they do eat Malayan [ a live bearing snail ] snails , as the only tank I have without a population of Malayans out 20 tanks , has 2 skunk loaches in it [ I've seeded all tanks with these snails ].

What kind of snail is it you have ? any idea ?

I have Snails too,at the moment I am putting a Lettuce leaf in the tank at night, also squishing them.My Angel fish eats them off my finger

Having just been through this problem, I ended up having to remove all the sand and replace it since my problem was with trumpet snails. Overfeeding is a mojor cause of snail population explosions. I found that out the hard way. To help bring the problem under control, cut back on what you feed them to every other day or even every 3rd say. Your fish won't have a problem as they can go for a week easily without food.

yep you beat me to it rdd1952, starve the fish and the snails will disappear. they will actually be fine for a month to 6 weeks without food so personally i would feed tiny amounts twice a week for 3 weeks.

From what I know about skunk loaches, they should be avoided at all costs. Highly aggressive and described as "the spawn of satan" by CFC.

I don't know what kind of snails they are, but starving the fish doesn't work. I haven't fed my fish in a month and the snails have tripled snice I last fed them.

I've kept skunk loaches with all kinds of fish over the years , they really only bothered each other ........in some cases it may be best to get just one

I really doesn't matter what kind of snail , loaches will thin them down .

I have 2 tanks with no fish , just plants and snails , one tank has been without fish a month , the other many more months, no fish no food , I still have plenty of the small pond type snails in one , and many Malayans in the other . That rout could take several months , I've read on another forum that the Malayan trumpets are carnivorous and will eat other types of snails , even each other if no other food is available , personally I can't say either way , just something I've read.

what kind of guppy again ?

How big is your tank ?

Maybe if the tank isn't too big , a massive cleanup could help .........this could possibly mean recycling your tank though .................

Getting rid of snails,

Hmmm, butter, garlic, white wine. Very fine dish, end of snail problem, and a satisfied stomach. :)

Just joking, I hope you cure your snail problem. Small members of the botia genus have worked for me, if your tank is large enough. I also used to have members of genus trichogaster eat snails for me, but it may have just been my particular fish. Some of my bettas also pick off small snails, which I find odd, but they also munch on planaria, and God knows what else lives in my tanks!

I also have removed them by hand. Snails can really be a pain, best of luck to you!

I don't have a specific type of guppies. They are the ones from the pet store and I've mixed them with feeder guppies. I think my tank is a 35 gal.

Thursday I went to the pet shop and they had only 3 types of loaches. I got two black loaches, but I think they are too small to get the job done. The shop told me loaches eat snail eggs and I think thats the only thing these little guys can eat. The shop owner also told me there was a liquid I could put in the tank that would kill the snails. I was wondering if anyone had used something like that and what results did they get?

Black loaches ? can you describe them , or post a picture , I've never heard of them .

If they are Botia loaches they should eat snails at small sizes , my latest pair skunk loaches were about 1" when I got them , and almost immediately went for snails , turning the shell so they could go in head first after the meat .

That liquid should be your absolute last resort , I myself would find another way , try to avoid adding chemicals to your aquarium .

what kinds of plants do you have ? snail poison may also kill your plants .

I would pick as many out by hand as I could until you begin to see the Botias eating them .
