I am getting a new tank soon, 30 gallons, and was wondering about anything I need to know about set-up. Before I set up my first tank I remember reading about putting styrofoam under the tank to help with possible cracks, but is this really necessary? Anything else I need to know? I hope to pick up the tank this week, but it may be a few weeks before I actually set it up, because we need to do some work in the room (replacing the flooring) and such. Want to have everything ready once the room is all set, though.

As long as the surface you are putting the tank on is perfectly even an flat you will be fine without styrofoam. If not then you need it.

Does the tank have a floating base?

if it has a glass base, put polystyrene under it. If it has a plastic brace base, then its optional.

Thanks for the info. I'll have to check it when I go there again. I didn't even know there was such a thing as a floating base. I'll check for the brace and see. If I decide to go with the styrofoam or polystyrene how thick should it be?

if its a floating base the the bottom panel doesnt actually touch the floor. the edges are extended and it sits on them.

in this case you dont need anything under it.

mite be worth contacting someone with a donor pic next to there name for some mature filter media so when your ready the tank is too!

erm, thats the most important thing really. once you have an established filter then everthing else can jus fall into place when you want.

Thanks for the idea. I've already got a ten gallon tank up and running and will use some of my own filter media from that. That should do it shouldn't it, especially since I will not be adding any new fish until I'm sure everyone has moved safely and is happy.

I was thinking I could move about 2/3 of the filter media to the new tank and then get a couple of new fish for the other tank to keep it up and running, since I need to leave them in there for 3-4 weeks before adding them in with my long term buddies. They'd still have about 1/3 of the old media and since there would only be two of them the remaining media should be able to handle that small load, shouldn't it?
