a really stupid question i know but is filter media just a slice of sponge or whatever is in a established filter and can be added to a new filter?

does it matter how much i take, i mean i dont want to leave a tank with only half a filter

You can comfortably take up to a third of the media without affecting the old tank too much, as long as you replace it with new.

the term 'filter media' is used for anything placed inside the filter to either trap particulate or become a home for bacteria colonies.

it does not guarentee that it has already been in an established filter.

its comming from a really well established tank that is being emptied i would take the whole filter but there is a pleco in thier that i cant take as my tank is too small (i can take everything else) but untill he is found a new home i dont want to leave him without, the tank is leaking and the owner said i could take everything for nowt but i cant justify taking the pleco just for the sake of taking him nor can i leave him with nothing, when he is rehomed i will go back and take the filter
