New here, and I couldn't really find a definitive answer to a question I had....

I just finished my first community tank (really cool), and I'm planning to get back into Bettas', & pick one up soon.
I had really nice red one when I was a kid... and I honestly can't remember what happened to it (I think it went to my older brother, heh.)

anyway I know all about tank size, gentle filtration/low current, tank cycling, etc etc...
but I've read many different opinions and whatnot about various things...

So do they need an airstone; is oxygen something I should be worried about?
Are any of the different types of Bettas' less hardy/different in any way, other than appearance?

I can't think of the other questions I had anymore. , so I guess I'll have to ask them when I remember

thanx guys!

Tbh no fish 'Needs' an airstone. So long as there is plenty of surface movement for gas exchange... :shifty: or so I'm told. And I've not had any casualties yet!
But particularly in regards to bettas, they breath air from the surface...no matter how hard you try to aerate the water.

If you want an airstone it'll be aesthetic only IMO, why don't you think about having a good sponge filter if you like the look of bubbles?

I don't know about hardier species of bettas...good water quality is essential for any of them though! :)

I didn't plan on any type of aeration, for any purpose (they're so noisy  ). hehe. So that's a bit of a relief.

thanx for the quick response! :good:

I found some good lil air pumps online, made by JBL.
S-100 5.86 dB
or S-200 7dB

If I'm remembering those sound levels exactly. Either ways, apparently the average pump gives out 25-30 dB of sound...and 7dB is very quiet anyway. Even if you aren't making a direct comparison.
Just if you ever decide to go for an air-pump for a small tank...thought you might like to know

Or you could perhaps add a venturi to whatever pump you're using if it has that capability. But tbh it should be fine as is, especially with a betta, as they're air breathers.

Excellent!
I really appreciate that...

funny thing about small tanks here, they seem to be a lot more expensive than bigger tanks, when you compare. go figure :shifty:
I really can't wait to go look for my betta now.

some bettas like the bubbles in the tank, my friday loves his bubble feature, he even sleeps in it.
other bettas don't like movement in there tank at all. i suggest you try it to see how the fish responds, if they seem to be in distress remove it. you can always using it in another tank :p

Just agreeing the rest of the posts. No reason to have an airstone/bubbler in a betta tank. The only purpose it serves is pleasing your eyes aesthetically and ruining your betta's bubble nest :p. Some bettas like playing around in the bubbles though.

Try it if you are keen on having one. Serves no purpose with bettas though. ;)

LOL my boys love playing with the bubbles. My PK stalks the hippo in his tank that blows a bubble every now and then :hyper: I have it across the other side of tank so their bubble nests are all in one peice ;)

I beg to differ. I have four air stones running in my lounge room and i cant even hear them. If you get decent quality pumps you wont hear them at all. I have clamps on all of mine to lower the air flow so the pump does not belt out air. I wouldnt say its for my viewing pleasure....more for water quality because otherwise my water is really still.
