As mentioned in a previous thread, I had to take my midas hybrid-thing back to the LFS... but I went by there yesterday and saw him.... and he swam up, obviously having recognised me, and did his little dance and... I just can't let him stay there!!
I gave it some thought and figured out a solution. He will have to be housed alone, and right now I can't afford to do that as well as buy my oscar a new tank... BUT I could divide up my current 29 gallon tank until I get the new one (between 75 and 100 gallon,) and let my new small oscar live in my extra 10 gallon until then (he's too small to compete with the big one right now, anyway.) Once I get the big tank, I can house the oscars in it and let the midas have the old 29 gallon until I can afford to buy him at least a 55 gallon!
Woohoo, I've got this thing figured out. If he's still there tomorrow or the next day (and I'm sure he will be,) I'll go pick him up and bring him back home ^_^
Right now he's king of the goldfish, because he got beat up when they put him in with some blood parrots that were a little bigger than him . He was patrolling every inch of the rather large goldfish tank yesterday, making sure no goldies got out of line
Don't worry, he wasn't freezing... that water is probably 72-74 degrees because they'd need a chiller to keep it below that.

Aww - what a sweet story.
Did you do the "Awwwwwwwwwwww" and almost get tears in your eyes when he recognized you?

Yay for you!!!

I just felt really, really guilty when he recognised me... like I'm the only person he knew, and now he's in a place where all these new faces stare at him all day :(
I don't want anyone else to have him... he's mine, darn it!

Edit: God only knows what I'm going to do when I move out... I'll be moving at least two big tanks :S
So this is what they call obsession

it's funny how we get attached to fish, yet we don't think they get to recognize us.

A lot fo fish, especially cichlids (which is one of the most ntellegient fish species) recognize their owners and like to have their attention

I have an orange and white swordtail that I was going to trade in to the LFS and totally out of the blue my girlfriend/fiance says "But you can't trade in Doris"

Until that moment, the fish did not have a name. Once she named it, it was all over. You could not give me a $1000 for "Doris" now. How can you trade in a fish with a name??

My rainbow cichlid definately recognizes me. When ever i walk by the tank there he is at the top following me

When i first read the title of the post i thought it was gunna be about the Celtics
I knew exactly what it was going to be about when I read the title. Good on you,Synirr. I know how personable they can be and midas' are known for tolerating their owners only so I'm so glad to hear he's coming home with you.

It's awesome having a tank for just one fish. I know some people think it's a waste but I think they're worth it.

Yeah... I didn't think it was worth it until he gave me those big ol' puppy eyes.
Sigh, I'm such a softy.

You know - my mom always had fish while I was growing up and I never cared about them or looked at them, in fact I can remember my sister and I tormenting the heck out of them by knocking on their class, bouncing small playground balls of the tank, etc. etc.

I think my dear love for fish now comes as some sort of redemption for all the sad things I've done to fish (unintentionally, of course). (including the ammonia spike that killed my beloved bleeding heart tetras and my little clown loach (i had no idea it was a clown loach until the other day, several months after he died!) :-( )

But anyway - I had no idea fish actually had a personality.
I mean with their heads the size they are, who'd have thought they could actually have a brain inside there that allows them to remember things, comprehend things, feel things, connect emotionally with their owners, etc. I'm completely sucked in.

My mollies recognise my voice, I only say hello. Will you have to buy your fish back ? :)
I'll have to give them back the $5 they gave me for him, I'm sure *lol*

I went to pick him up today, but the tank divider I ordered didn't come in with their shipment... so it'll have to wait until next week. I did tell them that I want him back, though, so they said they'd make sure to hold him for me until next Wednesday

Oh, and just because I want to share the good news, my LFS is moving to a larger building later this month, woohoo!! All their fish are 30% off right now! Hopefully after the move they'll be looking for a couple of new employees :shifty:

if they're moving they're probably having a sale on aquariums as well... get em while the gettins good!

Also when reading this initial post on this thread it was screaming in my head "Don't buy fish until you have their long term homoe set up!!!" I just posted something about that in the New World Cichlid forum. It's easy to do, I've done it, I'll prolly do it again. But! it is best to have the home for the fish before we buy them. Now do what all young americans do when they need cash quick, steal something!
