Away to start adding lots of live plants to my 110L but I've been told to get a good algae eater to keep the algae to a minimum, I have 2 cats at the moment, synodontis featherfin and a striped raphael cat, neither of these are good at getting rid of algae so should I get a pleco instead?

Thanks

My bristlenose keeps my tank spotless!

I've got a 110L as well :)

plecs will only eat a decent amount of algae if theres nothing else to eat and its hungry. ive not seen my BN plec (in a smaller tank) stuck to the glass in well over a year. if you've got algae somethign else is wrong with your set up. ive got 3 different plecs in my main tank and none of them make an effort to eat algae.

you shoud get a plec anyway because they're great, but dont expect it to do your cleaning for you. i would go as far as saying a group of oto's would be better, or somethign else that spends most of its time on the glass, like a butterfly plec.

Have to agree with Moochy. Plecos will eat algae but it's not their primary source. Look at the causes. How much light, what's the water movement around the plants like, are you using CO[sup]2[/sup]. I use apple snails to keep mine clean and they do a great job (they look cool too!) Have a look in algae to help out here. Oto's are good and don't forget the cleaning power of shrimp! Haven't seen my cherries for ages as they are now buried in the undergrowth of my new plants - keeping the algae free! Siamese algae eaters are ok but DON'T get the Chinese algae eaters - they can turn into monsters

Good luck
