Believe me, I understand wanting fish but being short on space. However, you just have to think about WHY you want to keep the fish in the first place. Do you just want to own the fish, or do you really want to KEEP it? If you really want to keep it, you have to take into account what would be best for the fish, not what will just keep it alive.

In this case, what is BEST for the ram is to be kept in a male/female pair in a tank of at least 20g. If you can't do it, then YOU have to decide whether you want to compromise the fish's health and quality of life or not.
well stated parker..couldn't have said it better myself and was getting a little frustrated so tried not to respond...

doesn't a 15 gallon tank have the same footprint as a 10 gallon and 20 gallon high, just with more height than the 10? rams are bottom dwelling for the most part and need the width and length of the tank much more than the height...a 20 long would be a great investment IMO (it is only a few inches longer than a 10g)...

10gall 20 1/4 x 10 1/2 x 12 9/16
15gall 20 1/4 x 10 1/2 x 18 3/4
20 High 24 1/4 x 12 1/2 x 16 3/4
20 Long 30 1/4 x 12 1/2 x 12 3/4

The 20 long is the same length as the 29gallon, fwiw.

ok so here is the good thing! im getting a 25G long tank sometime this month! and im going to set it up with some old gravel from my 10G tanks and maybe get some danios (they cost .69$) and cycle it! can i use to 15 gallon filters or do i need a 25 gallon filter! cause i was thinkin of over filtering it since they need near perfect water! i can use a 25G filter AND a 10 gallon filter! :p i and yea parker i know what you mean i just want to keep them! i want to try something different! i cichlids seem like the choice! i would do brackish but the salt is to hard to keep up with :) but yea i need to know something! what kinda hiding places to they prefer!? caves? plants? or both? cause im getting alot of plants in the next few weeks! umm but yea since you guys have placed it in my head that i cannot do the 10 gallon or a 15 gallon i just went to my LFS and had them hold this 25G long for me :) good move eh? it cost like 65 dollars :p and a 25G filter only cost like 20 dollars and im going to be on a 200$ budget so i guess im set i just want to know everything that i have to get!

good, the 25 gallon is a better decision in the long run...rams like slate caves, driftwood, a flat surface to lay eggs, sand to dig their ditches in, and planted tanks...you can use how ever many filters you want as long as you don't create too much current for the fish...a 25G filter + a 10G filter should be fine though and is prolly what i would do

another thing! if i cycle with danios can i leave the danios in there with the rams?
sure, why not? in the list i showed you of my tank i have danios, tetras, cories, and rams together

thank you very much for the info ^_^ i cant wait till i get that 25G hehe i have also always wanted to keep danios! they are so cute and exciting!

just FYI, pearl danios look GREAT with rams.. if you can find them i highly recommend them over zebra, leopard, blue, etc
