Hey guys.. just a quick question for those of you with german rams. I've been doing some reading on these guys and have become quite interested in them. Could a pair of rams live peacefully with 6-7 tiger barbs? We're hoping to get a 35 gallon and hubby's insisting on the barbs.

thanks!

I believe tiger barbs are nippers and may nip the rams fins. Rams are quite peaceful fish. =] Maybe wait for other opinions (raechel has blue rams and is VERY knowledgeable) but im not so sure its a good pairing. =]

 I feel bad when people mention my name as being knowledgable...I just LOVE fish IMO. :p

Anyways have a pair of german blue rams...one is a long-finned ram and the other is a regular german blue ram. I have them in with neons which are supposed to be a little nippy but I have never had a problem with them nipping at anyone. I am not sure about tiger barbs and have never had them.

Funny thing, I just got a 55 gallon today that came with about 10 tiger barbs. They were in there with some black skirt tetras and some clown loaches and none of them had ripped fins. :dunno: It may depend on the fish you get. Are your tiger barbs in with anything else? Do they nip at them? If they do, they will most likely nip at your rams. The only advice I could give you is to try it and see what happens, but make sure if nipping does occur you can take the rams back or house them somewhere else. Goodluck! Rams are quite the beautiful fish.

No need to feel bad! Your LOVE for fish has made u knowledgeable. Someone who loves the fish wants to and tends to do the right thing. Listen to raechel she knows wassup ;)

sorry to embarrass u ;)

thx guys. We don't have the rams or barbs yet. We're hoping to get another tank soon and are trying to research and decide now what goes in it. He's stuck on barbs, I've fallen in love with the look of the rams. Guess I could always try it when the time comes and if need be the rams could go into my existing community tank.

I've been monitoring the tiger barbs in my tank and they haven't nipped at anyone so far. :dunno: I read that if you keep them in large groups like 10 or something they won't be aggressive. But I am not 100% sure.
