German Rams Fighting!

have a 40 gal and I have to admit, I am pretty overstocked at the moment (running 2 filters and doing double water changes) - my friend has a 55gal and i have been slowly stocking her tank from mine lol. I am pretty well planted so Im hoping they can do a good job keeping seperated until Im able to buy another...

I guess maybe I had a pair to begin with - should have left well enough alone... :/
OK so what it looks like is the original male (in the pic by the heater with the bubbles) is fighting with the original female (with the other pink tummy. The new male is being left alone.

What about the pink belly, no male I've ever had has a tum like that, finnage is not always a definator with this species.

1 is a male
2/3 are females

I'm 100% sure on that.

then the 2 females are fighting. Would they be fighting over the male? Do they HAVE to be in pairs or will the male breed with each female?

from my experience, I would say that you have two females, added a male and now it's time for babies - I had a pair and my male was constantly after my female (they were young, he was ready, she wasn't...you guys understand...) so I picked up another female to spread the attention around and as soon as I added the second one to the tank, my original female was after her constantly - within days my original pair had spawned and everything settled down (sort-of...). So, from your pics you definitely have 2 females and when you mention that they have colored up, that's a good sign of breeding! Watch the aggression levels and rearrange your tank decor if you have to - and then sit back and watch who gets the first date! Usually the pair that spawns will stay together. Hope this helps!
