I got 2 rams yesterday and tried to get a male and female based on what I knew about sexing them. I *think* I did it, but was wondering if someone could confirm or deny that for me. I named them Sonny & Cher :p

Behavior - At first, they retired to opposite back corners of the tank, but this afternoon, Sonny came out and has been much more active and brave. Cher is still maintaining vigil over her back corner. Sonny keeps trying to go say HI to her but she woll not have any of it. It's pretty funny to watch. He wriggles his fins at her and then turns his back on her and as soon as his tail is back there, she goes for him. The other thing he tries to do is get at her from the top. He'll swim in over top of her and go lower and lower until she finally notices him.

Anyway - here they are, thanks for the help:

Sonny has longer rays on his dorsal fin (hard to tell here, I can try and get a better pic if needed) and there is a tiny tinge of pink on his belly, but it's more purplish and isn't very much *at all*. Most of what comse through in the pics is where he has his fins tucked up.

Cher:

Cher has more black on her body, the first rays of the dorsal fin are not longer than the others and the pink is more pronounced than on Sonny.

Thanks for the help

They are both right about an inch long.

there not german rams in that pic they are bolivian rams
Are you serious? They look JUST like all the other pics I've seen of the German rams :S :S The Bolivian rams I've seen pics of have had much more pink and red on them, with little to no yellow.

The store just had them labeled as rams, so any misinformation here is my fault not theirs...

When you say longer fins, you do mean the first couple of rays on the dorsal fin, right? On one of the fish, the rays are longer and on the other they're the same length as the rest of them.

Sonny looks like a female, but I'm no expert. :flex:

By the way, beautiful rams.
Thanks :)

Yeah, I'm starting to think I got 2 Chers instead of a Sonny & Cher.

But, I still think they're microgeophagus ramirezi - the altospinosas I've seen are flatter on the bottom.........

Sorry to say it,but the reason why they are not getting along is because they are indead both females.
And they are not bolivians, these are the blue rams.Do you really want to know the gender?Simply look for the pink/purple spot on the females tummy.Males obviously are bigger and more colorful, with that impressive dorsal fin.

Pay special attention to the females belly(background),it shows certain pinkish spot

Thank you!

On the one, there is a *definite* pink/purple tummy spot. On the other, there is a hint of color, but it almost seems more like a reflection from the red on its fins than anything else.

The dorsal fins I was thinking might just be shorter b/c they're juveniles, but maybe I'll go back to the lfs and see what else they have...
