I know people usually buy these in pairs and breed them, but is it fine just to buy one? Or will it get depressed or something? I will be keeping it in a 20 gallon tank with a dwarf gourami and some zebra danios.

It'll be fine, and might grow up to be the dominant fish in your tank with only a gourami to compete with(zebra danios are pushovers ).

But I've read they get kinda depressed if they don't have a mate, is this true?

I love statements like that. How does someone know their fish is "depressed?" IMO, that's a human emotion and one that fish don't experience.

I know I usually am not the one to buy that kinda stuff, but I was reading in the cichlid index that they do

I don't think fish get 'depressed' as such, but some for sure do better in groups and some require it. You try putting a very small baby Discus in a tank on its own and see what happens...

Personally I don't think I'd keep any cichlid singly if I could avoid it, you would be missing out on so much without being able to see them interact and breed.
