German Blue Rams - new fish to 12G

Your tank is absolutely stunning! I am getting a 29 gallon soon, that I will be planting. But how long after you put all the plants in it do you have to wait to put fish in?

very nice

But a pair of rams in a 12g won't do im afraid, a 20g minimum is needed for 2 rams

Is that due to territory or pollution?

My opinions are that either way I would say that there's enough hiding spaces etc. for the required territories and I'm certain pollution won't be factor in a healthy tank like Jimbooo's.

I'm beleiver in "bending" the rules when it can be done safely - true, it is important to have guidelines but I would say 12G is fine for a pair Jimbooo's tank. A sparsely decorated 12G is another matter.

That's my humble opinion anyway, I'm no dwarf cichlid expert so I may be talking rubbish - in which case I can only apologise.

Jimbooo - Nice tank as always, lovely fish.

I just bought a pair of German Blue Rams on wednesday. Actually, I got two females and just got back from the shop today after exchanging it for a male. He's acclimitizing right now.

I think they kinda look like punks with those little spikes.. could call him "Punky". Original, huh? :D

thanks for the kind replies everyone

as to the stocking there is a reason for putting them in the 12G.

i originally put them in my 40G. after 2 hours they were flicking and gasping. i think the co2 was too strong coupled with the hot spell my water was at 29 degrees.

i put them in the 12G and they've been happy now for a week. i'll keep a close eye on them but seem happy so far.

Beautiful fish, funny auctually i was admireing them this afternoon at a lfs, i have never owned a pair but they really are nice id probably buy a couple for a tank i have, are they peaceful enough, what else have you got in the tank with them, ive mainly tetras in this other tank, and what type of riccia is that, is that riccia fluitans or dwarf riccia, its nice whatever it is naw i fancy getting some dwarf riccia, cant find it here yet though.

hehe.....twenty questions, sorry about that ........nice fish, nice pics

Hi Zig:

firstly, rams dont do well in new tanks, you need to wait at least a year in my opinion (tried and failed 6 months ago!) they are not aggressive at all and mine are with glowlight tetras and white clous mountain minnows.

The riccia in my 12G is dwarf riccia, i have fluitians in the 40G (mixed with more dwarf). it was a special order for a customer in my LFS, he only bought 4 of the 8 pots they ordered so i snapped up the other 4 in an instant.

Pseud: i agree. i've been thinking along those lines myself. Punky it is then.

and his lady friend??

Cheers for the info jimbooo

The tank i was thinking of is up and running a couple of years, i might buy them later this week, be a nice addition to that tank.

Thankyou

Very Nice Jim, what else is in there? I think I saw some white cloud minnows and a female guppy?

thanks Nix,

yes WCMM's, glowlight tetras, 4 female guppies and er a big poo machine sailfin plec (stuck here as the misses wont let me rehome him he needs to go fast, still trying to educate her on WHY he needs to go he really shouldn't be in there)

thanks. as long as it's cycled the same as with any tank. in my case i had a normal tank (the odd plant, nothing special) for 6 months stocked it with fish then added plants but the plants can go in at any point.
