Hi all, firstly i would have searched for the answer but the search function isnt quite working for me, not sure why but maybe something to do with this swich over but anyways ....

I aquired two rams (paired male and female), the female has just laid eggs. What i would like to know is... how long does it take for them to hatch? (roughly), Whats the best foods to feed on when hatched?, When or at what point do you start to feed them?()straigth away or after a couple of days).

Ive never kept rams before and really am not experienced enough to know what to do, Tank is 180ltr, im guessing that will be big enough for the fry to grow on in (with the parents?), yes?, the only other tank mate now is a single 2 inch BN who really does just keep herself to hierself.

Any advice is very much appriciated

thanks

jake

I found with Bristlenose's...they will eat eggs but not bother fry so it shouldnt be a problem...the parents will beat on it/chase it if it gets to close anyway.

Hi matey, you should find they hatch at around 72hrs, for the first day or so, they will live off the egg sacks, after that, something like newly hatch brine shrimp is good for them, but if you cant any (and dont want to hatch your own) decapsulated brine shrimp (found on ebay amongst other places) is a great first food, also Ive fed fry on frozen (obviously defrosted 1st!) cyclops, or you can even crush very finely normal flake food, which you put into some tank water to soak and then squirt down to the fry. Liquify is also ok.

Keep an eye on the parents as they may move the eggs/fry around to keep them safe, so if you look in and they are gone, check around, they are probably in a ditch/cave somewhere.

Good luck :)

Thanks for the helps guys and gals, the BN will probably be moved tonight on the water change, also goto block the external filter somehow lol.

thanks mags for the help, will keep all who;s interested updated :), all new to me with cichlid spawns so we'll see how it all goes .

Thanks again all :)

Use some netting or some tights/stockings and wrap it around the intake with an elastic band or similar, that works well. Let us know how you get on :)

I usually use a course (ish) sponge, the old fluval internal filters use a circular one which fits over just nice and the just wedge a cutoff piece into the open end. Usually works a treat, doesnt block as often as netting or tights and acts as another bacteria collector ;)

Thanks for the tip though hun :)

Do you have wrigglers yet hon? :shifty:

The pair are still very much juviniles and the eggs seem to have turned white and then they ate them lol, im presuming there like cory eggs once gone white there not fertile?.

Better luck next time i hope :)
