Hi folks, I was cleaning out my tank at the weekend (yesterday) and trimming back my plants, and noticed that the rams had a batch of eggs in amongst the java fern in the sand. Some of the eggs look white in colour and others look almost clear. Is that a normal colour? I watched a video on you tube of ram eggs hatching and they were white, but I also read on another site that white eggs where dead ones.

I that they take about 48 hours to hatch and 5 days till they are free swimming. What should I do, can I remove the eggs and put them in a hatching tank? Or should I leave them there? I know you can take them out but how do I do it without damaging them? Also I have a smaller tank but no sponge filter can I just use a slow powered internal filter with some tights or something around the intake?

sorry for all the questions. I have had fry before but they were mbuna fry and I left them in the tank until they were big enough to catch and remove.

The tank mates are corries, black skirt tetras and rummy noses.

Any info would be good. Ta.

P.s I might try and rig up my web cam to film it tonight.

Update:

I looked when I got home last night (6.30) and all the eggs had hatched bar a few. Which was great, but I checked again at about 8.30 and couldn't see a thing!! No fry, nothing. And couldnt see any this morning either. I think they have been eaten by the corries.

Is it possible some of the fry have hidden away in the plants? I am considering setting up a breeding tank in the future.

If you spotted that some of the egg's have hatched it's good chance that the parents will have the fry in some form of pit until the egg sacks have been eaten and the fry are free swimming . The first time my Sev's laid egg's i kept an eye on them every day then after 4 days they all disapeared ! i was gutted until 4 days later ! lol When i seen this white mass swimmin under the parents . Watch the the rams defending a certain area of the tank or not leavin that area very much . My sev's have bred about 6 times and only once have i seen the fry before the free swimming stage .

Finger's Crossed for you that they are still there with the parents :good:

Ah, well thats promising news. I'll keep an eye on them, the male is still around the same area of the tank but not as vigilant as he was when they were eggs. Hopefully they are still all in there. Think I will still set up an extra tank though in case the fry do survive.
