I have recently invested in a 75 gallon tank. It will have a ghost knife and a comon pleco in it. I wanted to get a Geophagus species that wouldn't grow terribly large (i'm thinking 6-7 inches; 15-17cm). Theoreticaly I would like several of this species and per haps a few sword tails or similar smaller community fish. The info on the net regarding geophagus is laborous to wade through, but i've gleaned a few species names:

G. surinamensis
G. brachybranchus
Satanoperca daemon

Does anyone have any info on these species? Are they even what I'm looking for?

Any ones I missed?

Thanks fer the help.

I just got 2 G. surinamensis on the weekend, they're 4" and their colours are great, they settled in very quickly, they get on well with my Keyholes and Firemouths. They are always hungry, they seem to take all kinds of food and they sift through the sand all the time. They will get a bit bigger than what you're looking at, they can get to 9" i'm told, but they sholud be fine in your tank. HTH.

Any of the Satanoperca species would work fine as all are fairly peacefull towards tankmates, do well in groups and generally dont grow larger than 8 inches in captivity.
Both the Geophagus you mentioned are from the Surinamsoids complex and would work in your planned tank though with other Geophagus species you do have to be carefull as some species such as those from the Brassiliensis complex can be aggressive when adult especially towards others of their own kind and other eartheaters.
