Well, i picked up 2 lovely 3.5 specimens from work yesterday that are now currently residing in my 50G until my new 6ft is up and running, then they will be transfered to there. They have wonderful patterns and a lovely sparkling look to them!

They seem to be hanging out alot, i hope they are a pair!

Tut tut bunji, using commercial names :p . They are actually Satanoperca leucosticta but for some reason in the UK they insist on calling them Geophagus jurapari. True Satanoperca jurapari have not been imported since before WW2.

They are a lovely fish, i had mine for years but as my tastes swung toward larger more aggressive/predatory fish they became visably unhappy sharing a tank with the "monsters" so i sold them on.

I will be having a nice thick layer of silver quartz gravel (2mm) in the new tank which they should get on with.... :)

Sorry CFC, i saw them in the baensch atlas as Satanoperca jurupari, but i am not sure about leucosticta, they certainly have the clear markings on the front of their face that the true jurupari appears to have, but i dont profess to be a cichlid expert by any stretch of the imagination :p

Even 2m gravel is too course for them really, both of mine ended up with deformed lips from being kept on a fine gravel substrate :( They really should have a silver sand substrate or if you are worried about compacting use pool filter sand.

Baensch volume 3 goes into greater detail about the mix ups between leucosticta and jurapari, i remember reading something on the web about the reason true jurapari are not imported anymore is due to civil unrest in the country they are collected from.

I know sand is more ideal, but these guys have been kept with larger gravel in the shop for a couple of months now and seem fine. I just absolutely HATE working with sand... I love the look of it, but i just hate having to work with it, it cloggs your filters, it is so messy if you are syphoning or have to clean it...

So unfortunately i will not be persuaded to change to sand... My fish are just going to have to deal with it unfortunately...

Dont try and convert me, it wont work! I just hate working with sand so much it will take me a long time to actually want to use it in an aquarium.

Cool fish, I have 2 at about 8" each, and they always hang out together. They are quite a social fish and if yours are anything like mine will be quick to realise that you putting your hand in the tank equals food!! Mine always come and suck on my fingers as soon as my hand goes in the tank!! :D

yep, sorry mate, I agree with CFC on this one. when you feel how soft their lips are, you can understand why gravel isn't too good for them. See how you get on with fine gravel, just keep a close eye on them, but IMO it is sand all the way for these fish I'm afraid! :D

Maybe i will make a "sand corner" for them, but other than that im not having a sand tank, ive already bought the substrate so no choice :p

Ben

you should make a border type for your sand corner :p the last time i made a sand corner without using a border of some sort to keep the sand in... well the sand just mixed up with the gravel.. btw wont the fishes forcibly mix the sand around because they like to play with the substrate ?
