the sand thing is actually a big debate....by right we should provide sand for geos, but then i have seen them kept and bred in crushed coral bed. just like u said the FS kept them in large gravel for several months...and this does show anything goes.
i dont see any much difference in the choice of sand or gravel, except with sand , u could actually see the geos shiff the sand for their food, while in gravel they tend to pick up their food. the choice is yours anyway since it work both ways...no harm done if u stick with gravel.
