Genetically Altered Fish

Corrected the name. Didn't know it was going to be such a big deal. -_-

now you mention it i do remember that, however an awful lot of fish will change colour naturally if they are not happy with something like high ammonia levels. a fish looking 'off colour' is often the first warning an aquarist gets of a problem. if the fish can do it naturally why do we need to engineer some to do it? Also, do you really think all the people who buy them are interestied in them as an early warning system? nope they just like the pretty colours.

But the fish do not change in the way we want, nor at the lower levels we desire in drinking water. The people buying them are buying them as pets, but funding the research for further developments.

would you really want to live forever??? i certainly don't! you've moaned yourself about overpopulation, what would happen to the world if none of us died, people would still want to go through the normal procreation and have children who would in turn want their own children. if we're running out of space now what on earth would happen if people stopped and dying....... and that's without even considering how the governments gonna fund people's pensions!

I certainly should be allowed to live forever, other people perhaps less so :p

On a more serious note, the anemones don't appear to have any aging process, so we don't just get rid of death, we could potentially start to eradicate old age as well. Denying the possibility for great achievements in the future because of today's problems is not great scientific reasoning.

unnatural=bad

Then I guess you should be getting off of that computer of yours b/c ya know, it certainly isn't natural.
And I guess you should be taking off all of those clothes, b/c we all know they didn't sew themselves together naturally.
And I guess you'll be moving out of that house/apartment soon b/c well... they sure didn't build themselves naturally.

And I guess you should be taking off all of those clothes

===========================

All you females, you think us guys are that easy. Think again :p

ment in fishtanks

u pervs just wanna see me with my clothes off!

they are using gold dainos now to. did you know that these fish will breed true. meaning that if you take two pink ones you would get lots of pink babies. but if you do you will go to jail. sucks dont it. they should make different color ghost shrimp.

No you won't. Azoo can't stop you breeding them, they don't mind you giving them to people but they obviously don't want anyone starting up a fish farm and mass supplying them to shops.

They almost certainly could have GM'd them to be sterile, like a lot of the GM crops are. They just don't want someone to make money off of their work and intellectual property by having someone breed them and sell them.

FWIW, I have some glofish and they are a nice addition. Despite what you may read, they don't actually glow in the dark (maybe mine are defective?), and they aren't all that bright.

I seem to recall that the ultimate aim with the glofish is to create a fish which flouresces when certain pollutants are present, and thus utilise them as an early warning signal in water treatment (rather than waiting for the fish to die).

What price being able to port over the apparent lack of death due to old age from Anemones into the human genetic structure?

For the wages of sin is death but the gift of god is eternal life( spiritually). We all sin, so no matter what type of genetic modification you do, you will still die. Also, i am completely fine with glofish and i think they are pretty. They cross the line whejn you start to buy certain traits for your babies.

Only according to your belief structure :rolleyes:

the fish are trademarked and patented. so yes if u were caught breeding and selling or even just giving people these fish you would be in big trouble. even though you have bought them, the company still owns all rights to them in those matters. and you can bet they mind big time, your stealing profits from them.

I don't see what the problem is with Glofish.

The genes don't harm them, they live normally, just brightly colored.

I also don't see why people are pulling religion into this, but I shouldn't be saying anythig, being an atheist myself.
